  • "We'll be back tomorrow"

Customer came in with his wife and said they wanted two lines with Sprint, a new account. I go through it and get to a point when the kiosk stops me saying I have to call the carrier because, well...

Me: It's saying there's a canceled account that needs to be reopened manually.
    SC: *blank look*
Me: Did you have an account with Sprint before?
SC: ...Oh yea. That was over six years ago, though.
Me: Well, I'm going to call the carrier and see if they can reopen it for me.

So I give the carrier the customer's information and they come back to tell me that he has an unpaid balance of over $400 from the previous account. I thank him and turn to the customer.

Me: Okay, they said you have an unpaid balance from the previous account. You'll have to call them and get that taken care of before I can reopen the account.
SC: ok, *talks with his wife. I can't hear most of it, but I do catch the end of it* They need your picture ID, you don't have it. *to me* We'll be back tomorrow.

So, yeah. He's gonna come back tomorrow and try and open an account under his wife's name. I'm hoping it's before my shift. I'm also hoping that it catches it due to the 'hopefully' same home phone and address.

So finding out they owed $400 to your company didn't phase them in the least ehe? Too bad you couldn't just start sending the bills now that you have their current info!

    Keep us posted!

I didn't tell them the amount, wasn't certain if I should or leave it up to Sprint. And I'm actually Wal-mart, so I just sell the phones, have nothing to do with the bills. So I don't think there's anything I can do.

So, it sounded like he lied to his wife, telling her that the reason you couldn't open the account was that she didn't have her photo ID on her? Wife doesn't know there's a balance on the old account? Yikes.

Seems like she was there. sounded to me like he wants to open it under her name, but she doesnt have her id on her.

            Yea, she was there.

They did come back and used her name. I had asked at the beginning of my shift but there's nothing I can do if the system allows it. They would've had to pay a deposit so they got two T-mobile phones instead.

The suck I meant to illustrate was that this couple are just refusing to pay the money they owe the phone company and were willing to sort of work around the system to get the phones. And I'd be willing to bet will do the same thing with T-mobile down the line.

They'll run out of phone companies before long .

For the sake of those who work for Magenta... I sure hope not.

Well, I'll hope I'll never have to talk to them at least.

*offers the OP some cookies and chocolate* I know a few people like that . I even helped one get a phone, before I knew they were like that. Since I cosigned, got stuck with several hundred dollars in phone bills .

I'm pretty sure they will ditch one or both of these phones and not pay their bill again.

Just keeps the rates higher for the hard working people like me to pay.

                    Thanks losers!

Ran into lots like that when I worked cell phone sales. Had one fella who stiffed us (and all the other companies) at three-month intervals, just as he'd get cut off by another company. All you had to say was "Tony" and every cell phone salesperson within a (literally) 20-mile radius knew who you were talking about. He was charming, talked one friend after another into signing up for him, promising to pay them, which he never did. He'd bring them in, stand there while they signed up and walk off with the phone. We finally got permission to refuse the sale when we knew it was for someone with an outstanding cancellation bill.

But yeah, if the system lets it go through, it's a sale. Aggravating, because 99% of the time we got stuck for it when a spouse signed up under those circumstances.

Maybe they'll get put on FlexPay with T-Mobile. It's a "special" plan for people that are credit-challenged.

That is why i go with a prepaid cell phone, if i don't have the money to pay it, i don't wind up with a several hundred dollar bill, they just shut it off and when i pay it, they turn it back on...

The downside - beyond the obvious scamming and dishonesty - is that the extra costs these companies incur from either getting stiffed or having to chase down the SC translates into higher costs for the customers and lower wages for the front line workers.

So by the time they run out of companies to screw over, they've piled up an impressive bill that someone else has to pay.
