don't forget your friendly neighborrhood delivery drivers, and fast food workers either. we got killed tonight cause there was a little rain early in the evening so everyone wanted PIZZA for dinner or they just did not want to BBQ again this weekend.

No, I don't forget, and I take good care of the delivery people who can find my house within thirty minutes when the person who took my order told me "45 minutes to an hour".

Fast food? You have my sympathies, so I try to keep it simple. Or I might not want to eat what food I am given.

Another one here who had to work yesterday. It wasn't that bad. Only had one person ask if our store ever closed. No, no we don't. No, not even Christmas. No to any other day you may be thinking that we close. Never. Never ever. I don't mind people coming in shopping as long as they leave the fake sympathy out of it. Because if I did make some sort of comment then it becomes "You should just be happy you have a job!"

Ugh, I didn't realize I was that grumpy.
I would have a nice day, but I have other things to do.

A lot of places do not get time and a half on holidays (including christmas) and that would include the movie theater business. The one thing I do try to do for my employees is to schedule short shifts usually about 4 hours. Holidays being busy, the time usually just flys by, so they are in and out quick and back to their families. Better the the 12 hours I personally have put in anyway. Salaried so I dont get anything extra either.

If only customers would realise (I know, as if that's likely) that their holiday shopping / pizza delivery / entertainment is our holiday gone.

              Meh -

I don't care about working on holidays. I'm not really a holiday celebrating person anyway. Plus, not only did I get time and a half for working yesterday, but I also got 8 hours hoilday pay. And I was very busy helping people. So my day went fairly quickly. No big deal.

I took some vacation only got 8 hours straight pay for yesterday. If I had worked would have added 8 at 1.5x.

Almost for me also, airport never closes, and we only evacuate IF the tornado is on airport grounds. I work almost every holiday, unless it's on a schedualed day off.

I really AM sorry you have to work on Labor Day! I do get the day off ... in fact I'm on vacation this week...(ducks thrown tomatoes)...

I don't get Columbus Day, Election Day, MLK's birthday and stuff like that off, though. They tend to be quiet days at work because people think we're closed, even though we've never been closed on those days.

Everyone thinks I'm terribly negative about holidays because I don't bother celebrating them if I have to work. I usually buy some beer and rent movies after work, and try to forget holidays exist.

Um, gee, sorry, I didn't notice the holiday because I had to do my time in purgatory.

That's my attitude about any holiday I have to work, including Thanksgiving or Christmas. Holidays are for being around people I like doing things I want to do. Work, bosses, coworkers, and customers just don't fit into that equation.

This is actually pretty much how I feel. But, yeah, if they fee bad for us, why do they shop??

Today, being, of course, Labor Day for us American types. Originally created as a day for all the laborers and workers and such to take a day off from the daily grind, spend time with their families, etc.

I forgot it was a holiday, because I had to work that night. I did have a lady who did the whole "sorry" thing. I don't know why customers think that saying that makes our day, but whatever. Not only that, but I was really sick and needed to get some medicine at the convenience store nearby...it was closed.

My ex was a security guard at a factory, and his assignment was manned over all holidays - they weren't allowed to book any holidays over Christmas week either, if that was how your rostered days fell, you worked it.

One Christmas he was landed with the day shift, which was the worst thing you could get, and was most surprised at about 11 a.m. to see one of the ladies from the canteen pull up at the gates in her car. She knew he'd been landed with the day shift and had brought him a box of mince pies and sausage rolls.

I not only had to work on Labor day, I got to pull a double.

That is, we got 2 trucks Monday night to unload instead of the normal 1.

Then we came in Tuesday to find out we were only supposed to have 1, Monday, the second truck that showed up was supposed to be for Tuesday.

They were going to let us have an "easy" night since it was a holiday, and they forgot to tell anyone so we did both.

I'm pretty sure the salesman I talked to on Monday was not too awfully upset to be working. He earned the commission on a $40K GMC Yukon that I bought, for less than an hour of work. I went in, told him my non-negotiable requirements, and he helped sift through the inventory and found 5 that fit the bill. We narrowed it down to 3, test drove 1, and bought it.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

I was at home on the holiday, curled up in bed after Dragon Con. I did not go shopping, nor bought anything, of course it would have taken an act of Gord to get me outta that bed..

Avoid shopping on the holidays, cause to be honest, it is insanity..squared. ALL the SC's, their kin, and even normally nice people turning into SC's come out.
