  • Do You See Me Buying Stuff?

Yesterday, I bought some items using the self checkout to consume on break which I was getting ready to go on. A customer came over to me instead of the service desk employee and asked me where an item was. I told him where it would be and he told me he couldn't find it so I ended up showing him. He even wanted me to ring up his item which I did since I wasn't clocked out.

After taking the customer, I closed down, brought my purchase to the service desk so the service desk employee could sign the receipt, and went outside to eat. Later, as I was leaving, I mentioned this customer to the service desk employee who told me that some customers only care about themselves.

I hear you.....apparently holding food and drink obviously intended for a break means you're not busy and can help people.

I usually will tell them where it generally is ("over in hardware"), but that's it. If they want any more help, it's "I'm not working right now." If they have a problem with that, I KNOW management will back me up. I've heard one say, "We don't require employees to work off the clock," to a customer. Period. The end.

Or, better yet, they catch you when you have your purse, lunch box, sunglasses, AND car keys in hand and think that you can help them.

I just ignore them, if I get a complaint I just tell the SM that I was not on the clock and it was very obivious that I wasn't.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

Couldn't you have just referred them to someone else that could direct them? I'm not getting on your case, but could you have walked them in the direction and still made it to the breakroom? Or were you on your way outside for your break?

Hell, I just barely walked into the store with my messenger bag hung over my shoulder and I had customers asking me where certain sale items were.

            That depends on two things:

1: If her bosses are so anal retentive about "customer service ratings" that they will actually climb down her throat if she doesn't wipe the customer's ass for him.

2: If the customer blows the story out of proportion and says, "That cashier was very rude and unhelpful", or something to that effect.

Trust me, I've been in that situation and it can get very annoying.

See my threads on ' no badge= not working!' and 'slight sexist suck'. Sure, ask me where dog food is when my co-worker is standing right there. WORKING.

People can kind of suck sometimes.

Where I work, breaks are paid unless you work long enough to get a lunch so I was still clocked in when this customer came over to me. Also, I've been spending my break outside since there's a table with an umbrella where I can eat and there's a roof over it so I can eat out there even when it rains.
