Yesterday between 3-4 a couple comes up to the second floor. The woman wants to use a computer for something business related. On the second floor we only have 2 public computers, (not counting the catalog and database computers on stands throughout the floor) and they are only meant to be used for job searching, anything business related, search for scholarships and Foundation searching.
So I walk with her to the other side of the floor where the computers are. She needs to log in with her library card/computer use only card but she can't find them (she did say she keeps on finding Kinko cards while she is searching her folder). She asks if our color copiers are working and I tell her they hardly work.
Aside about the color copiers/printers. O-Say (can you see) provides the service (because they are the cheapest biders for the service) and one kink is that when you go use the color copiers there is a timer that logs you out before you can make a color copy. By the time you scan your card, wait for it to say "print or copy", choose copy, then press the start button, it has logged out, but it doesn't tell you. It just jams the paper, and we have to go digging out the paper. The O-Say people tell us it's because the color paper has to be placed in the machine a certain way, but still same problem. Printing isn't usually a problem though. Hardly anyone prints from the color copier, just copies; copying is the situation where it jams.
Back to the story. I had to make a computer use only card for her, and I logged her on. I go back to my desk. 5 min. latter the guy (that was with this woman) comes back to me; or rather, he sort of stands behind me and starts asking for help. I hate when people are too lazy to stand in front of me to ask for help. For all I know a person is talking to someone else. Anyway, he wants a card and I go give him one and he doesn't bother to tell me he wants to be logged on. He wasn't shitty when I didn't log him on but it would be nice to tell me what you exactly want instead of me guessing.
I leave the second floor at 5.
Almost 7pm I go to the 3rd floor for my 7pm shift and I see one of my cw at the color copier. She tells me the story about some guy on the second floor wanting to use a business computer. I thought it was the guy I helped more than 2 hours ago but it was a diff. guy, who was being a diva because cw was helping the woman I helped between 4-5.
Around 7:15, as I make rounds on the 3rd floor, the woman comes up to me and asks "do you work here?" I guess she forgot my face. She told me the guy on the second floor sent her up to get her copies. We go to the color copier and I saw 3 copies already there (we can remotely send stuff to other copiers on other floors; I don't do this since it usually just automatically prints copies out and the patron doesn't pay for it). I show the woman these and she bitches that they are wrong, they aren't the right size, that they have to be 8x10. The pics are of her and some kids. I say I can refund the money for the 3 copies if they aren't right. So she scans her card and see she has no money and she says she should have $15 on the card. I told her I will refund the $3 but if the copies arn't the right size she should go back to the guy and have him redo them. She kept on telling me, though "all you have to do it just print out those copies." I tell her she didn't have the money on her card, but I'll put the $3 on it for the "wrong copies" and we can print out the batch that is $3. She starts to walk away and I tell her to wait until I refund the money so I can give her the card back but she bitches that she is frustrated, all I had to do was print out the copies.
Personally, I don't know how she lost money if my cw was making the copies for her. My cw would know if she needed a refund. She can count what gets printed out or not so I call bs on the lost money.
10 min. latter my male cw comes up, asking for the card. I give it to him, telling him I refunded the money. So he starts walking down the stairs back to the woman but the elevator opens and there she is, getting angry at me, telling me, "you don't want to work, you shouldn't have a job." I tell her I gave her a refund. She walks to the stairs and sees my cw and calls out to him about how she wants a refund, I tell her again I gave her the $3, but she wants the money back to go to kinkos. I tell her we don't give money back.
So at closing time at 8pm I talk to my female cw about the woman, and it seems the woman didn't have enough money on her card so my cw credited her money to make copies. So the woman couldn't have lost $15 anyway since my cw added money to her card. Also, we talked about how the woman wasn't doing anything business related at the end, just making photo copies, but cw said she really didn't care if she didn't use the computer for anything business related.
Great, my cw screwed me and the other cw for going the extra mile.
