  • Handicap people are gross or something.

This woman comes to the desk this morning to complain about her room. The room in question was an accessible room for people with disabilities. We were sold out last night as well, so that was pretty much the only room available at the time.

(read the following as if you were discussing swimming in raw sewage)

Woman: "I demand to switch rooms immediately! I can't believe you put my husband and I in a room where handicap people sleep! And you had better not charge us for last night either, it's completely unacceptable that we had to stay in a handicap person room!"

Our awesome front desk supervisor charged her anyway as she paid cash and we weren't about to refund her money for that stupidity. The really annoying issue is that it's pretty clear they smoked in the room but there's not enough evidence to prove it so we can charge them the smoking fee and/or throw them out. They're clearly experienced at smoking in hotel rooms as they brought their own cleaning supplies and all the tables and counters are as clean as if the room hadn't been used at all.

They're here again tonight and we will be watching them. My coworker this evening loves busting people and is really good at it. They've done this before but we don't have enough to bust them and put them on the no-rent list. Thanks management for your stupid rules.

The funny thing is, our accessible rooms are generally nicer than the other rooms. They have more walkway space, a larger bathroom, and less wear since they get used less often. I guess there is the fact that those scary handicap people use them...of course those scary handicap people also use the regular rooms as well, but the regular rooms aren't labeled so I suppose that makes the difference.

I've slept in one of our handicap suites (We have one smoking and one non cause they aren't used often.). I LOVED the room.

And I'm with you. No refund. See, if you'd have complained BEFORE you slept, I'd have told you,"Sure.. no charge, but you can't stay here as that's the only room I have left.."

And yet, you know, the handicap parking places at the supermarket are extremely attractive, everyone wants to park there..........

I get asked for the suites all the time. When I explain that my suite on first floor (Usually the ones only ones left) is handicap, most people jump at it. They know it's extra room

We get these people all the time as well. Once, we got a couple SUPER pissed off at us. Boss Man later told us that in the country they're from, they are very strongly prejudice against people with mental and physical disabilities, and were probably very insulted. That still somehow doesn't make me feel sympathetic for them.

The only real downside to our handicap rooms is that in the winter, those roll-in shower floors get COLD! During a big snow where I was stranded at work I had to live in one of them for about a week...I'd dart in, turn on the hot water, and then dart back out and let it run a bit before I showered. Otherwise, those rooms are way roomier, and ours have nicer A/C units and carpets since they were remodeled the most recently.

I strongly dislike the wheelchair accessible hotel rooms. Sure, the bathrooms are much bigger, but I've noticed a very strange trend in hotels. At least, the big chain ones. The wheelchair accessible rooms tend to only have one actual bed and one pull-out couch. Since I always travel with my parents, guess who ends up on the couch?

I've yet to find any hotel that has an exception to this. Wheelchair-friendly room? Huge bathroom, but I end up sore from sleeping on a ridiculously uncomfortable pull-out couch. Standard room? My chair barely fits in the doorway, but I get an actual bed.

All the chains I've worked at in this area are just more or less standard king or two queen rooms with a slightly different build. I also would not enjoy sleeping on a pull out regularly.

Have you pointed this out to the chains? I would imagine it happens to a lot of disabled travellers who share a room?

Firecat: My chain is one of those. I've even turned in a few of the comments (Well, all of the comments people bother turning in). About it. If you have a survey card, turn them in with that as a comment

My mom has suggested that I actually write letters to them. I may or may not actually do it.

wow, that's over the top stupidity; she should be grateful you were able to take in her sorry ass at all.

as for the smoking, get someone who's sensitive to smoke, they might be able to detect it (i can, simply because it makes me ill/triggers my allergies).
                          look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

We used to have two double beds and some single queens, but under new ADA standards, we have to have just single double-size beds in ours because otherwise there's not enough room around them. It upsets people who are travelling together and need a wheelchair accessible room. If they have a caretaker, I can do an ADA-comp to give them a second free room...I'm pretty lenient on the definition of "caretaker", too. Still, it's not the same as sharing a room, but without removing walls and reducing the number of rooms we have to rent, there's not much alternative.
