  • Threats. . .

Had a Sc come in today well, she was ticked bout some brake work we did on her car. So she comes in and well does this rant about how she will call the BBB and local news station blah blah blah.

    Anyways. . . .(my rant)

Threats of calling the BBB, local news stations or even corporate do not scare me!!! Really what are going to accomplish? Like I'm going to freak out and be like 'No massa don't call them I's give you all's the money!'

The majority of threats like this don't usually result into anything. I don't think she or anyone else is smart enough to even find the number and call BBB or corporate themselves which they typically don't. Even if a call does reach corporate they just send the customer right back at us and my manager just has to take care of the issue which ends up being a waste, cause my manager could have just taken care of it from the beginning

The funnest is one a SC threatens to call corporate, is about to walk out then walks back asking if we can get them the number, which honestly I don't even know and end up googling it in front on our computers in front of the SC It's not even a direct number but a 1-800 customer service .

Our corporate complaint number sounds fake. So I have to google it in front of guests.

Oh yeah, had a hotel guest like your brake work tard. She thought I was gonna burst into tears or whimper I guess, I simply said, "Oh, so I'll finally get to see what BBB stationary looks like?"

    She wasn't impressed. LOL

The BBB doesn't actually do anything, do they realize this? At worst, your company will get a B/C rating on their site. I don't think I've ever looking up a companies BBB rating.

When I was a concierge, I did use BBB ratings. If a company had a lot of negatives in the 36 month period, didn't recommend them. If a few, no problem. There's always a few complainers no matter what. Size of the company worked in there also. A huge company with a lot of branches will naturally have more complaints than a small 1 branch operation. But if you're averaging 5 or 6 complaints a month at your small location, I am not going to reccommend you, since around 85% of people with an issue with a place dont bother to contact BBB, that number is a big warning.

I've worked for about a dozen companies over the last thirty years or so.

I hear threats about BBB, or attorney general, or Mommy all the time.

I've actually had to deal with one BBB complaint, which I disposed of with one or two phone calls. The BBB staff actually has a pretty good ear for bullshit, so if the complaint is along the lines of "how dare they CHARGE for their services" or "they closed early on Christmas, I WANT THEM TO BE OPEN" you'll probably never hear from them.

At the gas station I've had one complaint to Weights and Measures in the last five years.

Buddy pumps mid-grade gas. Our pumps mix regular and premium to make mid-grade, the valve that supplies premium was sticking. So every time it opened or closed it made a loud thunking sound.

Buddy decided this loud thunking sound meant, obviously, that we were pumping air instead of gas into his tank, and when I wouldn't refund his money, and refused to admit to any thievery (Me: "It's a sticking valve! That's all!" Him: "Nuh-UH you're selling air instead of gas and that's ILLEGAL!"), he left, very angry.

I called my pump tech, and he replaced the valve that day.

I got a call from Weights and Measures the next day. I chatted with the guy, I described the sound, and he said, "Blender valve, huh. Is it fixed?"

            "Took care of it yesterday."

            "Sounds good."

And that was that. They didn't even bother sending somebody out.
I have a map of the world. It's actual size.

I just looked up my company on BBB.

              C-

              3 complaints

              1 contract issues
              2 sales practices

              2 administratively closed
              1 resolved

I can tell you that all 3 of those complaints all have to do with the same company whose owner decided after 3 months of having the machine in their office that they didn't want it and spent the next several months harassing anyone who would listen to them. At one point I was cussed out and told I was ineffective as a receptionist (long before I got my promotion), and that I should just kill myself.

              Yes, you read right.

Needless to say, that company is no longer with us. Contract cancelled, machine picked up and no more dealing with the asshole.

yeah to me the BBB is just PFB or M3C with a bigger website

plus just like PFB & M3C, they have no legal authority.

At one point I think the BBB had a lot of relevance as businesses were very conscious about such things.

But the vast amount of BS combined with indifference on the point of some owners/corporations has made them less relevant.

For me, they still have some use when it comes to finding something like a contractor.

The best part is, you get to *pay* for the privelege of being rated, iirc. No payment = automatic F (doesn't even matter if you were not aware that you were even listed) >_>

No wonder nobody takes them seriously -- aside from the aforementioned "check out a new place to make sure they don't have a ton of recent negs) thing ^_^

Thats what I'm saying! I work for just one of those retail megaliths, one bad mark isn't going to hurt them.

                      Update:

So the lady came in today after she left her SUV overnight for my brake tech to look at it in the morning. Now we did the rear brakes on her truck before (hence why she was complaint) WE never touched the front. So we check and the rear brakes are fine, it's her front brakes giving her issues (vibration when braking) so I let her know and tell her that either just having the rotors resurfaced (since the pads had alot of thickness would solve the issue or just have the front pads replaced which would include a rotor resurfacing. Course she says no and try's to put the blame on us saying it wasn't like that until she had the POS serviced with us, and says she is going to take it to her (her words) "licensed mechanic" which in my head had me Cause we have licensed techs as well, or else they would not be working there, as well as had me thinking "well why didn't you take it to him in the first place!?!?!" Before she leaves she says that if her "licensed mechanic" says other wise that she would be back with her attorney, to which I responded "would he be licensed?" I'm such an ass XD

Once, back in the dark ages....I contacted BBB and they actually helped me dissolve a dispute I had with the company.

This was about 8 yrs ago...i think their reputation has diminished since then and IDK that too many people pay much attention to them now.
