  • Locals at a Hotel

I have been working in the hotel business for about 10 years now. And still the one thing I don't and probably will never understand is locals. You want to rent a hotel room in your same town you live in. Then you want to rant and rave about the rates being so high. I'm sorry, but if you are the stupid idiot who wants to get laid secretly, then I guess you have to pay just as everyone else does, or stop bitching and go home. Since it is 5 minutes away.

In my experience there have two categories that locals fit into.
    1. The group you described. I might as well include the drunks who stay the night at a hotel instead of driving home.
    2. This is a much smaller group, but these are the people who are unable to sleep in their house. They might be getting work done, entire house being sprayed, gas leak, etc.

Of course, group 1 is the one that's loudest about rates.

Welcome to the forums. Hope you enjoy your stay here. Superhotelworker aka Superhotworker will take good care of you.

The hotel we stayed in in Bridgeport, VA on the way to Pensic had a rule that if you lived with x number of miles of the place (I can't remember exactly) they would not rent to you. I asked why, I was curious.

It was because locals were renting the room to have parties and trashing the rooms and creating disturbances.

Last room I rented hardly had enough room to have a party in. But they do it. Must not have a whole lot of friends to have to worry about where to put them.

Depends on the type of party you are having.

When I was a little girl, for some reason I became terrified of the house burning down.

Anyway, when I asked what would happen to us if it happened, Mum assured us we'd stay in a particular local hotel I knew while our house was being rebuilt. (We ate there for dinner when we were 'dining out on our best behaviour'.)

Of course, our house never did burn down so I never found out what their hotel rooms were like - but it really worked to reassure me!

                    1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
                    2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                    3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                    4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

I'll rent a hotel room in the same town for a convention, because I want the convenience of being at the hotel if I want to change, take a nap, or just get away for a few. Also because I know that I'm going to drink and I don't want to worry about driving.

One convention that I went to used to be 11 miles from where I lived. I've moved since then... and so did the convention! The convention is now located 30 minutes from the town I now live in (and an hour & a half from where it used to be) and I still get a hotel room.

A couple of years ago, I rented a hotel room about five miles down the road. The front desk guy asked about it when he saw my ID, but I just explained that I couldn't going to sleep in third floor bedroom without A/C during a heat wave of 106 degrees. He had no problem after that. :-)

Thanks for the warm welcomes all. SHW is a great person, and I rather enjoy working with her. But yes, I am a bit higher up on the totum pole at work than she is, and I work alot more hours, so I get alot more idiots than she does. It was nice meeting tech and angel? this past week. the few stories we shared were interesting.

As far as local guest. We also charge a room deposit which used to just be for the locals. Now it is for all cash paying guest. It's an easier way to reassure our rooms don't get damaged in some way. How ever you would be surprised the number of idiots who will still smoke in a non smoking room and lose that deposit. Or the number who will get kicked out of the hotel for what ever reason and stil gripe they didn't get their deposit back for screaming and yelling at 3 am and waking everyone up. Or being escorted off property by the police, which then is an automantic non refund of the deposit. Stupid people will never learn, but they also never come back thanks to our lovely DO NOT RENT.

You also, as Mr. Hero mentioned, get companies that book blocks of rooms at the hotel where they're holding their holiday party so that the employees can get a good rate if they feel the need to stay over that night. (I think this is because if the employees live far away then the shuttle services aren't going to suffice?)
