  • Inexplicably Enraged Customer.

Today as it was swiftly approaching closing time for ____ on_______, a customer came up asking for shoes that she said were being held for her because they could not find the mate when she was last in. I asked her how long ago she had them put on hold, she replied that it had been _______. I told her that the shoes may have been put back out on the rack seeing as they were on sale. She said that the person she spoke to told her they would hold them a week. I then asked her what her name was and asked New Girl, who was in her second day of work to retrieve them and told her where they should be.

New Girl retrieved them quickly and came up to ring out the customer. It was 3 minutes to close at this time. I told the customer that since it was so near closing time that we would try to get this done for her as swiftly as possible. When New Girl scanned the shoes, the register asked her to enter a price. So we determined that since the original price was like $_____ and since they were __% off, the price was actually supposed to be $____. Somewhere in this the customer had asked if she could use a __% off coupon, I believe I told her we would check. After we determined the price, she had tucked the coupon away, so I asked "Coupon?", and she handed it to us.

I believe it was at this time that she started calling me rude. I immediately apologized and said that I was not trying to be rude and again said that I was very sorry. She never did tell me what I did that she perceived as rude, but I believe she called me rude at least ten times and kept saying that she had worked in retail and asking if she needed to talk to my manager. I told her that she could talk to my manager if she like and that I would call her if that is what she wished. She never asked me to call a manager, but she kept asking me if she needed to speak to her. I'm completely confused as to what I could have done to offend. I was polite, if tired. I didn't rush her, but the lights were turning off over her head as this was all happening. I called her ma'am, I said please and thank you, I told her to have a pleasant evening... and she still called me rude and threatened to speak with my manager. Each time she did this, I told her she could if she liked and that I would call my manager for her. I even said that if I sounded monotone, it was because my allergies were acting up. She claimed it wasn't my tone, but she didn't say what I was doing that offended. She also repeated that she worked in retail a few more times in all this.

I really don't know why she was angry at me. I've never seen her before in my life. She got her shoes for a really low price. I even asked New Girl if she thought I had been rude, and she didn't think I had. The customer even yelled at me from the door, when she noticed me watching her, (which I was doing to see if I could lock the doors yet since it was after close now) to ask if she needed to speak with my manager, and I said she could if she wished. At this she left in a huff and watched me from outside as I locked the doors.

I wrote this because I would not be at all surprised if this customer did complain about my service and I wanted this to be fresh in my mind for my manager. I honestly believe I was very polite to her. I spoke a bit formally probably because I was tired and I tend to speak that way when I'm tired. But I don't know what I could have done or said to offend.

Other than her, I'd had a fantastic day with several lovely and thankful customers. What a way to finish :P

Perhaps she was hearing the voices in her head, which were being rude and calling her names, and thought that they were emanating from you. Crazy bitch

I wouldn't worry about it too much, you have another coworker as a witness to how you handled yourself during your interaction with this cuss-tomer. Hopefully if she does complain, your manager has enough sense to realize that the lady was nuts and blow it off.

    P.S. Welcome to Customers Suck!

customer: do i need to speak to your manager?
wickedly: I dont know, do you?

      :-)

that sort of question is one you use on your kids. its a threat for them to behave. with an adult its just a plain rude thing to say.

if you know absolutely that you havent been rude in anyway call their bluff. call your manager and say to manager that customer wanted to speak to them.

dont let yourself be bullied in anyway just because youre in retail. we may be low on the totem pole but its no excuse to be treated like crap.

Oh yes, I love the ones that threaten to speak to a manager, but never actually say they want one. I've been training our new receptionist for going on two months now (not that she needs me anymore, she's pretty much got the phones down pat, aside from the occasional difficult call; I'm just up at the front because my new space isn't ready yet), and I have ran into more calls dealing with that than I have all others.

It's actually gotten to the point where she hands the phone over to me when they say they're going to complain to a manager and I have to be the "manager". Most of their complaints are that they can't get the one over on her. And I know these people. They could never get the one over on me and then get pissy when they discover it won't work again.
        Random conversation:
Me: Okay..so I think I get why Zoro wears a bandana
        DDD: Cuz it's cool

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

Thanks everyone I feel much better for venting on here and to my boyfriend who pointed me to this site. He no longer works in retail, but I just started working retail not that long ago.

And thanks for the welcome ExRetailDrone!!

Also, I texted my manager and she told me not to worry about it. Lol, I love where I work. And that was only the second 'bad' customer I've had. Though I do have a high threshold for stupid and careless. (I was a tutor for two years in college.)

            Again, thanks everyone

Thanks Blas And yeah, I can't believe how some people act in stores. If my mother had ever caught me doing even a tenth of what I see everyday I would have gotten the talking to of my life. We do work for the customers in a way, but we aren't their whipping posts.

                Edit: and thanks Dalesys

                *hugs to all*

                  Welcome to Customers Suck Wickedly.

I think I had that same customer about a year ago at the jewelry counter. (For the record...I hate the jewelry counter.) I was pretty miserable with a cold and because we get written up if we call in sick, I went to work.

It was near the end of my shift. I was sick and exhausted. While helping this customer find a piece of jewelry and ringing her up, I guess I sighed. She reported me as being rude and I was written up anyway.

                  Shoulda just stayed in bed.

Don't worry about that stupid woman. Some people just aren't happy unless they're making someone else miserable.

True that. I don't know what I did, if anything, but she sure was angry. But I have my side already typed up to give to my manager if she does try to raise a ruckus. It might not do anything, but it makes me feel better to know that I'll have my side to present nicely and eloquently.

Just what I was thinking. It wasn't about you; it was about this woman being a control freak. She couldn't best you, so she kept repeating the question. She was baiting you. Now that you've got it off your chest, don't pay her any more mind.

on the first: since she refused to elaborate, she has no grounds to stand on; if you don't know what you did 'wrong,' how can you be expected to correct it.

on the second: for some reason, my bs radar is screaming right now.

welcome and ignore the twits as best you can; some people, as food lady said, are miserable and aren't willing to go that route alone.
                        look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

They think store workers are lower than dirt. God, I can't wait for the day when all store workers lose their fake politeness and just treat people exactly as they've treated them.

Ehe, don't worry about her. She probably figured if she got you flustered enough you'd either make a mistake she could bitch about, or offer her more of a discount. Plain old SC behavior pure and simple.

I no longer work in customer service, but I have coworkers whose moods shift more often than the winds, so I gave up long ago on trying to be nice or even just to keep morale decent. Some people are just adament to bring others down or make themsleves feel better.
