    Guest: Dave, I need to reserve a place for my anniversary but I am worried about hurricanes. Can we hold it until that day with no deposit just in case?

    Me: no ma'am.....you could wait until then before booking

    Guest: well can I get a written guarantee that you wont rent it to someone else?

    Me: no ma'am

    Guest: but what about my anniversary?

    Me: I am very sorry but I cant hold anything without a deposit

    Guest: well thats not fair

    Me: I am very sorry

    Guest: I am going to call my lawyer (I am not joking, she said that)

    Me: you can do that

    Guest: youre very disrespectful

    Me: ok

    she starts crying and hangs up

        Wow. I was fully prepared to lose the room I am currently renting because I didn't have the deposit to hold it. I got lucky no one responded to the ad for it by the end of that week and I'm thankful tot he gods in heaven. But I certainly wouldn't expect a hotel and or vacation property to hold a space for me because I didnt' pay to have it held.

        I'd like to say I don't believe it but I get so many people like this working retail that I'd only be lying.

                              I used to get this one a lot in the cruise industry. For those of you who do not know, you can book a cruise with just a deposit (it's usually like $100 for a 3 or 4 day cruise, $250 for a 7 day cruise, etc.) and then would be asked about hurricanes. I would explain that if the cruise was postponed or canceled due to a hurricane, they would be compensated, but to book a cabin they still needed to put down a deposit. When they'd try to get around that, I'd say "sure, I can book this for you, but without a despot it will be released back into inventory in 24 hours," which was true. The system wouldn't hold anything for them without a deposit. Many transfers to a supervisor would follow, where *shock* they were told the same thing and hung up angry.
