I'm not a mother, but I don't understand how you can not be all "OMG OMG IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE!!?" when that happens!!
No kidding, I freak out when my son gets a nosebleed. I'd be beside myself if he ever got a concussion!

Of course, I wasn't stupid enough to let him stand up in the shopping cart in the first place. He sat in the cart seat, strapped in (usually in his Floppy Seat so he was quite comfortable), until he was big enough to walk beside me. There's no excuse for that level of neglect.

I hope you never see this happen again, but if there is a next time, call 911 immediately. Do not let the parent decide the kid "must be OK". It is very easy to have a subdural hematoma gradually forming (bleeding under the skull). This is what killed the actress Natasha Richardson, she hit her head on icy snow on the bunny hill of a ski area. If management gives you grief have them google the lawsuits regarding children with brain damage who fell out of shopping carts. And if you see parents who allow their kids in the main part of the shopping cart, or riding on the lower shelf of the cart, speak up and ask them to have the kid buckled into the seat.
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the restraints...

        What a neglectful bitch

I'm so sorry that you had to witness that. That poor child! Like others have said, it is not a good sign if a child takes that major of a hit and doesn't start crying immediately. Especially when the kid's eyes were unfocused. I'm no doctor, but that sounds like a concussion to me, also. And you do not mess around with those. I hope to whatever is sacred that the mom wasn't such an idiot as she appeared and did take her kid to the ER like she stated she was going to.

I have a horrid feeling that the mother will soon find out, if she hasn't already, that "I'm sure she'll be fine, because she's not crying anymore" is NOT the way to think about any injury. Is there any way to learn what happened?

In shock, suffering internal hemorrhaging... there are many things that could have caused it.

As soon as I got done reading this I started to cry. I have a 2 year old niece and hope to have a child of my own sometime in the next 5 years, I would freak the fuck out if that happened. I can't believe that lady thought her kid was fine because he stopped crying, if he suddenly stopped crying and his eyes still wouldn't focus I would do 100 mph on the way to the hospital because that to me means that something is wrong with my kid. I would have called an ambulance too.

                  Ok, everyone.

Can we please stop with telling the OP what she should/could have done, and also please dispense with the graphic speculation as to the injuries the child likely had?

I'm sure the OP was traumatized enough by the experience, and we aren't here to offer armchair analysis of what she could have done differently.

                  Thanks.

It's okay, Pepper ... there are a lot of things I could have done, perhaps SHOULD have done, but I was told otherwise by management and security. They make the decisions. I put in my input, as a witness and someone with some first aid training.

The mother said she would take the baby to the ER because we suggested it to her. She declined offers of an ambulance. There is not much else that we could legally do, I think. It is documentated that she declined.

She is responsible for her own child so I don't think we could go over her head about it.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and comments.

I'm glad that it was documented; in case (God forbid) something horrible happens to the baby and Momma decides to sue the store, you can produce the documentation to CYA. Not sure if that'll help, but...

::sigh:: I wish people would take parenting a lot more seriously, especially with infants and toddlers. Especially, especially with head injuries! That's not something to shrug off!

                        I have to agree.

Shit happens to the best of parents, but come on. This could have been prevented.

My ex-husband dropped my youngest son on his head during an icy winter. He was about 8 months old. Granted, it was at home - but we didn't even THINK before we hauled him to the ER. I can safely say that if we'd been in a store or something, I would have been screaming for someone to call 911.

He's 20 now and a complete pain-in-my ass, but he was fine.

I'm always telling kids that are trying to stand up in the kids' seat of our shopping carts, "Please sit down." Complete with a 'sit down' gesture. If the parent's savvy, they often chime in, or at least hold the child steady until they can extract them from the cart and carry them or set them down. If the kid is sitting IN the cart proper, they get the same request. "Please sit down," with the gesture accompanying it.

Saw a kid start to tumble out once, but the parent was quick enough to catch them and deposit them right back on their butt in the cart. Kid was startled at how quick it happened, and looked at me. Without missing a beat, I said, "And that's why we don't stand up in the cart!"

Oh god! I really hope that woman actually took her kid to the hospital. In my mind, it's always worse when the crying stops. If only people could make parents take better care of their younglings.

With a reaction so unconcerned as that woman had for her kid, all I can say is that she better have taken her to the ER.
