  • Wherein I Destroy a Business

    I worked 8-4 today. Literally at 3:59 I'm heading to the break room to get my coat and have just about escaped into the back corridor when a cantankerous old man stopped me and demanded to know if we'd gotten tax forms in yet.

    We hadn't. We usually don't get them in until December and they go out as part of the post-holiday promo playbook.

    Hoo boy the guy did NOT like that answer. He looked me right in the eye and shouted "SO WHAT IS SOMEONE SUPPOSED TO DO IF THEY NEED THEM NOW?!?!? I HAVE A BUSINESS THAT I COULD CLOSE TOMORROW IF I CAN'T GET SOME 1099s!!!!!"

    Dude, it's freaking October. 1099s are required to be issued by Feb 1 - if I remember correctly - so you've got PLENTY of time. Besides, we aren't a tax shop.

    Me: Well if you go online I'm sure you can find them, or you could probably get some from the IRS if you give them a call (no idea if that last bit is true).

    SC: WELL I GUESS THAT'S WHAT I'LL HAVE TO DO!!!!!

    He walked away, and I beat a hasty retreat into the break room, changed out of my work shirt, put my coat on, and left.

    Two weeks to go......

    Only guessing here, but perhaps he has failed to file his 2009 1099s, the IRS has noticed this, and is sending him dire nastygrams.

            That too. Some people just can't take responsibility for their own actions.

              That's the thing I love about sucky customers. They get themselves in the most horrendous scrapes, only to wait until the last minute to run in and scream at us that we are responsible for the axe that is about to fall.

              I remember one particular customer, suspended from driving until the very end of time itself, saying to me, "Well, you are the expert. You tell me what to do!"

              The truthful answer was that I could have answered that question ten years earlier, but at the point he was asking me, he was past the point I could help him. Except that I did recommend that he stop drinking. Not just drinking and driving. He needed to stop drinking period.
              To seek it with thimbles, to seek it with care;
              To pursue it with forks and hope;
              To threaten its life with a railway share;
              To charm it with forks and hope!

                You Are Correct, Sir! ^_^ www.irs.gov has all of the forms one's heart could ever desire, all downloadable for free.

                  Yeah, not sure how this would be your problem *shrugs*.

                  I know I've had a situation where a business that does nothing but taxes messed up, but not sure how anybody but them were responsible. They filed the wrong form for our city tax, and got me in hot water with the city..but at least they made it right as soon as I showed them the letter. City was also nice and waived the fee (which the tax business would have had to pay anyhow) at least.

                    Is destroying a christmas better or worse than destroying a business?

                        You get a chance to destroy Christmas every year, and for lots of different people. How often do you get to destroy a business?
