  • B.O. Man Strikes....

I feel really bad for my co-worker because she was the one that ended up having to make his sandwich.

I was in the back room washing some dishes when the door beeped, letting us know someone just came into the store. My co-worker goes up front to help him.

About 30 seconds later, I start to smell a slight hint of that well known B.O. smell. At first I thought maybe what my co-worker was doing beforehand had made her sweat a little, thus the B.O. Smell. But then I realized that didn't make sense because she has smelled fine all throughout the day and has never had B.O. issues before.

Then the bread oven goes off.

I go get the last tray of bread sitting on the rack that needs to go into the oven and I walk out to the front with the bread. IMMEDIATELY the smell hits me like a brick wall! Then, I look at the guy and he's an older man wearing a tank top in Washington rainy fall weather, and not only that, he has both his arms spread wide apart while leaning against the sneeze guard. It was just utterly horrible. As soon as that bread was put in the proofer I quickly walked back to the back room while covering my face. It was that bad.

To make matters worse, the smell was enveloping the entire store. I could now strongly smell his B.O. in the back room. My co-worker was pretty quick about ringing him up and getting him out of the store. As soon as she was done, she ran to the back room and made the "stinky face" while waving her hand over her nose.

His stench lasted in the store for almost 10 minutes after he was gone.

Almost have to wonder if that couldn't be a bit of a sanitation concern, especially with him leaning on the sneeze guard...

Ick, I hate having to deal with smellies. Were there any other customers in at the time? Eurgh, can you imagine trying to eat your lunch when that hits you?

I have a hard time keeping my lunch down in the face of that. There's no way I'd even try to eat.

Yes, there was actually a mother and teen daughter sitting at one of the tables eating together. I'm sure they smelled it, too. They never said anything to us, though.

When I was cashiering (before becoming a floor person) we had a guy come in at least once or twice a week. He had MASSIVE b.o. and everytime he came in, he would end up at my register. It was awful, I would literally gag and one time it was so bad I almost puked and had to run to the bathroom after I was done ringing him through. After that day I told my FES that I refuse to ring him up and when I saw him heading toward the registers I would shut my light off and go to the bathroom. His b.o. was a mixture of garlic, onions and armpits. It was nasty as fuck and it came to the point that all the cashiers would try to run and hide when he came in.

Ah the joy of being a lab worker....my sense of smell has been mostly burned away-though salmonella smells horrible....
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

Reminds me a little of a guy whom I encountered in the library today - his breath smelled like he'd been eating fresh cat turds, and it was REALLY hard not to gag when talking to him. (he'd come over to where I was shelving to ask a computer-related question) I ended up sending him over to the customer service desk......partially because I couldn't quite make out what he was saying (my hearing isn't so great, and he had a thick accent).

For some, they don't care, for others, there is nothing that can be done about it other than keep living or turn hermit.

As for smelling themselves, no, they can't. You can only smell so much of a certain thing and then you can't smell it any more except for very brief snatches that don't really make an impact.

                      Ahh yes.....

Back in my days at the car parks office, I once had to deal with a stinky couple (I can even remember their address now, 12 years on, that's how scarred it left me) who had some problems with their parking permit, so naturally it wasn't something that could be dealt with quickly, oh no. It wasn't just BO, although there was plenty of that, but also the smell of clothes that haven't been washed for a long time. Nice greasy hair, too.

At one point the woman suddenly leant over the counter towards me, the better to get her point across - I never fully understood the meaning of the word 'recoil' until that moment....

I still don't think the fact that deodorant has been invented has reached the minds of everyone in the US...

                          Yep. Olfactory fatigue.

And while it is true that in some cases, there's a medical problem, most of the time it's due to lack of bathing, brushing teeth or washing clothes. So yeah, if your hair is slimy and clothes are filthy and there's dirt crusted in every crevice of your body, don't tell me it's a medical problem! Get thee to a shower!!!

Way back when I was in high school, there was a girl who was notorious for her BO. She was in choir with me for 4 years. For 3 and a half, I was assigned to sit next to her. *Gag* There were days it got so bad people would throw up, and days when she would get sent home to shower. Good Lord, it was awful.

At work we now keep lysol air spray for immediately after these people leave. I have yet to encounter anyone who smells as bad as She did, though.

                              Totally agree.

Had someone come to the counter yesterday wearing a T shirt that appeared to have all that week's dinners over the front of it. Their fingers were black with ingrained dirt. That isn't having a problem, that's just being dirty.
It seems to me that those who do have actual medical problems, know about them, and they're the ones doing their darndest to try and stay as fresh as possible.
