  • call to the library, "Don't give away my books!"

This is a call I got on Mon. at the library.
    Me=
SW=Shirley Wilson, the idiot caller. Note, I changed her name.

Me: Thank you for calling the blah blah library, who may I help you?
SW: I'm Shirley Wilson, and I dont' want you to give away my books!
me: (thinking, did you donate some books to our library and you want to make sure we sell them at the book sale, not give them away? I'm sorry, I don't understand.
SW: My husband doesn't get paid until thur, and you are closed on friday. I come on Sat to pick up my books.
me: oh. you have books on hold? Ok, just don't phrase it as "don't give away my books." Do you have your library card?
SW: Is it the brown one or the colorful one?
me: (thinking the brown one says computer use only card, the colorful one says library card. What do you think?) Which one did you use to put the books on hold?
    SW: the colorful one.
me: ok, I need that one.
SW: I have to get it out of my purse (and she walks away, and I can hear her bitch) "So I said it wrong, I'm only human....So I said it wrong, I'm just human....I make mistakes" (finally gets on the phone) the number is blah blah.....
me: ok, one moment. (I look at her record) I'm sorry ma'm I can't extend your time to pick up the books, they have holds on them.
SW: You're rude, you should't have said what your said, I'm only human, I make mistakes.
    me: ok
    SW: what's your name!
me: ok, thanks for calling *hangs up phone*
2 min. latter she calls back
SW: Was I talking to you?
    me: yes, you were.
SW: you were rude to me! I make mistakes, I'm only human!
me: Sorry you felt that way.
SW: I have diabetes, I can't get upset and you made me upset!
me: you're making yourself upset. Maybe you should stop talking to me so you won't be upset.
    SW: *click*

I suppose i could have extended her time. But I really should have sent her call to the Circ people who handle stuff like that. In a way I can understand why she thought I was rude to tell her she said it wrong, but also, she just wound her self up.
And people have 10 days to pick up books. That is a lot of days, why couldn't she have found time?

Also, sometimes people leave their personal stuff-like folders, books-behind, so for all I know she meant that.

Thanks Ashaela! Unfortunately, I have passed the "I don't give a crap about this job" mark, so I don't monitor what comes out of my mouth strongly.

I didnt know diabetes made you cah-razy.

I hate when people use their disease as a cop out. Makes others look bad.

          Agreed.

What does your diabetes have to do with getting upset over books at the library?? It's not like you're Wilfred Brimmley angrily awaiting his next package from Liberty Medical on the front porch.

I have an illness so i'll use that as my excuse for not being a rational human being.

ugh, I hate that, I suffer from diabetes, and yes, sometimes it makes me a little grumpy if my sugar/insulin levels are a little out but thats not an excuse!

also it makes the rest of us look bad.

My guess is she was simply in a bad mood when she rang, but she doesn't need to pass the grump on.

ah well, have some cake and it'll make it all better!

CW: So what exactly do you do in retentions?
            Me: ummm, I ....retent stuff?

Hitting low blood sugar can make you irrationally bat shit crazy over the least little thing. Just ask my husband about my low bs incidents Still not a good excuse, since most adults should be responsible enough to prevent their low bs and irrational bs (the other kind of bs ) I agree with Amina - it makes the rest of us look bad

That was meant to be a joke, I apologize if our humor is not similar and offense was taken or if it's assumed I'm ignorant of diabetes.

I work with a woman who has passed right out and gotten extremely ill from low blood sugar.

I'm confused. What does her husband getting paid have to do with it?

If she is in a similar situation to mine, waiting until payday to have enough gas to get anywhere is very common.

I don't know how poor she is, but the library is downtown, where 90% of all buses pass through. Looking at her record, I see her address is close to a bus route. So she should be able to afford the bus....then again, this is Houston, where people drive 1 block just to buy a loaf of bread.

and about illnesses. We have another patron who is pretty much a dick. One day he called wanting some info. that I couldn't find for him. He then wanted the phone number to another library. He is always asking the phone number to that library. I asked him if he lost the number so he started to talk about how he was mentally disable, he doesn't have the number with him, on and on about his mental disability. Ok, fine, but then don't ask for my supervisor so you can go on a long rant about how rude I was.

No offense taken, and I did get the Brimley joke I just wanted to respond, in case you (or others) didn't know that low blood sugar can cause all kinds of cognitive / mood weirdness. And agree that it's still not an excuse for customer suckage

i got the joke too (a giggle here n there ); she's human? hooray for her; while it may not have been the most polite response, she wasn't exactly helpful with what she was asking for. if you speak in generalities, you get the coordinating answer.

as for the condition, boo hoo; i'm bi polar, does that mean i can throw a big fit when i don't get my way? of course not; i deal with it and move on. put on those big girl panties and act like you're almost an adult.
                          look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

The coworker I was talking about before has been gone since Tuesday. I'm starting to get worried. She has FMLA because her diabetes is so bad she is at risk for losing her feet

She actually doesn't snip or get sassy when she starts getting at an unhealthy level. She actually kind of goes into her own world and doesn't talk to anyone and tries to act like nothing is wrong. I wish she wouldn't do that. But why does she do that? My boss and shift lead (as I have been told by others) haven't always been the most fond of accomodating the very reasonable terms that her doctor has put her on for work. She doesn't do it for attention or to purposely make product late or skip shipment, I can't believe they even think that way.

Sorry for the threadjack. I'm worried right now.

I hope your cw is alright, Blas.

I think my customer was thinking more of the lines that me giving her a hard time will cause her to go into a diabetic coma then her actually having to monitor her blood sugar. Or I'm making her a cranky bitch for being rude then her allowing herself to be a bitch by not taking care of herself. Who knows, she might take excellent care of herself but she feels her diabetes allows her to be a EW.
