  • Irony (and racial discrimination). Short.

Yesterday I saw a customer who wanted advice about race discrimination at work. So I gave him some advice and filled out some forms so he can hopefully be seen by someone who knows a bit more than me.

As I'm finishing up he asks if he can ask a quick question about getting divorce. He's the last person I'm seeing so that's fine. It is fairly simple too, and I make a suggestion :

SC : I have to tell you something
    Me : Yes ?
SC : Africans, they're very sneaky
    Me : ....
SC : I'm an African so I can tell you. Verrry sneaky...

He had quite an interesting case for the employment too, defintiely worth looking into.

When he went on about the divorce - the thing he was complaining about was just that culturally the women want the men to do the divorcing. Not sure why that's "sneaky".

Uh, he wanted to know about racial discrimination, then explains that he himself has race-based viewpoints? I don't think you are the only one confused....

See, there's two kinds of things. People mistake one for the other, and it's depressing in many ways...

Racial discrimination is when you judge someone by their ethnic group. You see all hispanics as one thing, or all blacks as another. That's a bad thing, because it's a terrible prejudice.

On the other hand, there are certain cultural norms by which you can judge people, patterns of behavior that come from not an ethnic group, but a culture someone grew up in.

It's when you see someone and assume that they have the cultural patterns because of the skin color, that's when you're racist. Assuming that all red-heads are heavy drinkers because they might be Irish, for example. :P
