    sick f%$& at the library-kid sexually assulted

    This is from a work memo. I havn't seen anything in the newspaper. A cw said the news said that patrons saw this man looking at child pornography before the incident. Way to get the librarians involved concern public [/sarcasm]

    Good evening, all,



    This is to let you know that various news outlets will run reports this evening regarding an incident that occurred at the (BBBB) Neighborhood Library on Friday, November 12th. The incident involved the alleged sexual assault of a 6 year-old boy.



    The staff at (BBBB) acted quickly and appropriately, following policy by intervening when alerted to the situation and calling the police. The suspect was arrested and appeared in court today.



    If customers ask you about this incident in the coming days, we ask that you use the following information when responding:



    Ø (City) Public Library takes the safety and security of our customers very seriously.



    Ø The Library is a very public place, and staff cannot be in all places at all times. We ask that customers help us ensure the safety and security of our locations by being alert to their surroundings, looking out for their family and friends and quickly reporting to library staff any situation about which they are concerned.



    Ø We have security guidelines and policies in place to guide our responses to incidents that occur in our facilities. These guidelines and polices are reviewed on a regular basis and improved as appropriate. These guidelines and policies were followed in the incident at the (BBBB) Neighborhood Library.



    You may review the full policy and procedure regarding library security (Policy and Procedure 2.3) here:.... Please talk to your supervisor if you have any questions about the policy and procedure.

    Not to necessarily defend the patrons, but sometimes your brain does shut down. I once was at a drugstore trying to pick out a birthday card, and getting irritated at the jerk who was almost breathing down my neck, until I realized he was masturbating by rubbing up against me.

    I literally did not know what to do for what seemed like an eternity but was probably more like 5 minutes. My brain shut down, while one part of my brain debated with the other as to what I was really seeing.

        any chance you can install content filters?
        granted there's often ways around them but it may help discourage the ones who don't know a lot about computers at least.

          This sentence might be TMI, but I remember one day I was looking for porn on the internet at home, and one page I notice some women. I won't say they were off but just I wasn't used to seeing women look like that. Then I realized they were young teens. I freaked out, copied the web address, went to the FBI website and clicked on something there to let them know about the underaged women and the site. I'm waiting for some law enforcement people to haul me away, no matter that I protest, "I didn't know they were underaged!"

          So maybe the patrons didn't put 2 and 2 together, but I'm just so used to patrons blaming us for stuff. No doubt the patrons would tell the news crew, "the librarians should have been paying attention! It's their faults they were too busy helping customers find books to notice the guy looking at porn!" That would make a sucky patron.

          I hope the guy who molested the kid gets not nice things shoved up his rectum while waiting for his day at court, though.


          The computers have filters, just these jerk-offs are good at going around the filters.

              ... as someone who's been on the "no, it really isn't what you think it is" side of thing (when I was a toddler, no less)-- let me say this
              1) Alleged
              2) This information is second hand at best for depechemodefan
              Please, please please note I am not attempting to disparage or doubt depechemodefan or anyone s/he has gotten information on this topic from, I am merely pointing out we know next to nothing about this. The person who is the elder (adult? teen? who knows?) in this hullaballoo may not have done anything.
              Then again, what six year old would know what anything like sexual assault is?
              ... I'm not sure I want to know the answer, but it's entirely possible.
              Also, 'sexual assault' may just be something as simple as another kid hitting him in the nads. Or exposure. Yeah, who wants either of those things, right?
              Point is, lay off the lambasting until it's certain that someone did just ruin some lives-- because it might be that we're condemning and cursing an innocent person. Yeah, this is a forum board, but I hear this sort of condemnation elsewhere whenever something like this is brought up.
              Yes, if it is like we (so far) are thinking, it makes me feel warm and fuzzy from Justice (tm) to think that there is Special Hell for sexual molesters-- but I don't want injustice.

                Ugh. Of COURSE that had to happen at the library branch I go to, in the "nice" part of town. Guess I'll be studying at Starbucks in the future.

                  I'm amazed the guy could even look at porn on a library computer, our library has so many screens and filters and what-have-yous that you're lucky to be able to check Facebook, never mind look up kiddy porn!

                  If he did hurt a child...oh, I hope he ends up in jail for a long, long time. And that the kid is ok.

                    That being said, I got someone arrested at a library. I went by the computers and saw a man touching himself through his pants while looking at pictures of naked babies. Not kids, BABIES.


                    I pointed to a clerk, who quickly called security. Apprently they implied to me that this wasn't the first time they've been told this but never saw it before or some stupid shit. Why they couldn't just use history I don't know. I was like 12 when that happened though, so maybe internet history wasn't as easy to access then?

                    Also, our local libraries have been very strict on NOT filtering their computers. Free access for all.
                    However, since you need to scan your cards to get in, a child's card can be put into a filtered version of the net, if a parent chooses to do that.

                      iew. yeah one hand typing is never appropriate in public.

                      also you may want to check out your local laws on "exposure" to adult material. (like in VA it's illegal to expose minors to porn) so... if your area has any similar laws you might be able to use them against any adults surfing xxx in public, especially if there's a chance of children being around.
