  • The Snow Angel

Please note, I do not wish harm against people. But this was just hilarious!

Last night was the school Christmas fare, and it was absolutely fantastic. It was such a great night, that it has just reminded me how much I love working in a school. The atmosphere was amazing. UK members of this board will know that we have had a lot of snow this week, and that just added to everything. We had a brass band playing Christmas songs, kids and parents had set up stalls, people were making wishes and tying them to balloons, it was just great. And Santa was going to be making an appearence.

Who would have thought that the parents would be more excited about Santa's arrival than the kids? It was bizarre. They saw Santa walking up towards the school, and they all immediately ran towards the main entrance (where I work). I had about 40 parents, all crammed at the other side of my desk, and to be honest, it was getting dangerous. The office manager and I made a loud announcement, telling them to go back to the fare, and that they would see Santa in a couple of minutes.

Very few moved, and Santa had to push his way through the crowd. The crowd was actually getting larger, because a group of parents had also followed him through the car park. After a few minutes, they finally dispersed, and all I had to deal with were the parents that had followed Santa.

Now, I have mentioned the automatic doors by my desk a couple of times. Basically, my job is to buzz people in and out. There are no sensors on them to detect when people are there. So when they start to close, they aren't going to stop!

Of course, when the parents caught sight of Santa going through the doors, they made a dash before they closed. I sat there, shaking my head at them, when I saw a woman sprinting towards the entrance. It was quite clear she wasn't going to make it before the doors closed.

She hit the door with a massive THUD! And stumbled backwards, falling on the ground in a star shape. I immediately ran around to see that she was OK, while a couple of other parents helped her up. She was completely fine, and simply exclaimed:

"Was that Santa I just saw?!"

    And she headed inside.

The print she left in the snow looked just like a snow angel. I am kicking myself for not having my phone on me at the time.

Oh, rub it in why don't you.

I've been desperately wishing for an October snow fall. Now I can only hope that I get some snow for my birthday this year.

Move to Wisconsin and you'll have all the snow, cold, and ice you could ever ask for. And then more.

First meaningful snowfall and below zero weather before December. This does not sit well with me.

The amount of snow I have seen in the past couple of days is the worst I have ever seen in my area of the UK. Normally if we get a couple of inchs everyone freaks out and all the schools are closed. At the minute I think we are around 6 inches. So hey, I might get a couple of snow days next week!

As a Coloradan, I have to say ... you don't realize how lucky you have it -- we usually see our first meaningful snow around the end of September, and below zero temperatures in November are pretty common.

In my 40+ years I have never seen a snow day here for the schools. The rural buses might quit running but the city schools are not allowed to close in case someone does show up and cannot get in.

Right now there is at least 10cm of snow on the ground and it hit to -36.9 C this past week.

                  Fortunately it has warmed up.

We've barely gotten any snow, so I'd be happy to borrow some of Blas's snow.

What is this "snow" of which you speak?

Christmas here in Sydney is usually hot and windy or hot and pouring rain. It's almost fun to watch the santa's practically passing out from heat exhaustion from the santa suits.

I have promised myself that one year I will head to my family in the UK and have a white christmas

Personal record here was going to School (2-hour drive, starting at 6:30 AM, normally) getting there at 10 AM due to there being about two inches of glare ice on the roads (even the plowed, sanded and salted ones) and about 8 inches of snow in one massive storm.

Oh, and it was around -47C not counting windchill. Good thing it was around 10 years ago, or I'd still be cursing.

As for Santa, well, Even I still get the occasional burst of childish glee, and I dress up as Him for my nephews for Christmas.

They are usually wet and cold. There is only a 6% chance in London and average it happens anywhere in the UK about once every 6 years. (according to wikipedia)
