  • Possibly racist comment made by unaccepting SC

I was at the Uscan yet again, and a woman was buying jars of jam that certain ones were on sale for $1.99 and the remaining were on sale for $2.29. She bought one of the $1.99 jams and one of the $2.29 jams. She claims that both should be $1.99 and that the sign says that $1.99 is the sale price for ALL of them (don't you love when customers make up signs or information they give?). So, I call the manager (a black woman) over to do a price check. She comes back and tells me that indeed one she had was only $2.29 and not $1.99. The SC refuses to believe this and asks either me or the manager to walk over with her to show the sign. I tell her that was the manager who did the price check and told me about the jams. Her comment:

"She's the manager?!" Wow, no wonder this store's going bankrupt!"

My thoughts: Way to be racist, and since when are we going bankrupt?

I dont see anything racist there, just another customer whining when they dont get their own way. More than likely "Oh what a great help the MANAGER is, i guess they have idiots in charge"

I can see three equally possible meanings behind her comment.

      1. Non-racist. "The manager's blind and obviously can't read signs correctly. This company sucks for hiring a manager that is myopic.."

      2. Non-racist. "The manager's stupid, and obviously can't read signs correctly. This company sucks for hiring a manager that is dumb."

      3. Racist. "The manager's black, and obviously can't read signs correctly. This company sucks for hiring a manager that is black."

Now, we can interpret her comments any of these ways (or some other way I didn't see), but since this is all we have to go on, if you inferred that the customer was racist, then it was just that: your inference. Obviously you had the benefit of being there and being able to hear her vocal inflection and see her body language, and perhaps hear some other choice comments come out of her piehole, but based on what is presented here, we cannot definitively say she is racist.

We can only definitively say she sucks great big donkey balls.

Incorrect. We can only assume that she, in fact, sucks balls. The animal of her preference remains a mystery

The op did say "possibly" racist comment so they didn't complete accuse them of being racist. Only in their thoughts did they take that stance.

From the choice of words that the customer used and depending on how she said it (her voice) I might be inclined to think she was being racist too.

I didn't mean to imply that the OP did, in fact, accuse the SC of being racist. I was merely posing a "if you did" thought.

I edited my post slightly to try to more accurately reflect that.

              So...did she buy the jam?
A lion however, will only devour your corpse, whereas an SC is not sated until they have destroyed your soul. (Quote per infinitemonkies)

racist or not, any way you slice it, she's still a jackass.

Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

i thought the SC meant it as: perhaps a hint that the manager couldn't understand money. or was stealing.

                  though, it's a stupid comment.
cos the SC was trying to get the store to sell something for less than they were suppose to. the manager saved the store money from not giving in.

though i'm betting she said it for the power play. she didn't like being proven wrong so she had to do something to make her ego feel better.

Or even 4. Non-racist. "The manager doesn't realize the almighty customer is always right! This company sucks because it won't give me the lower price just because I said so."

But yeah, the OP, having been there, would have a better idea of the customer's tone and facial expressions, etc.

All I know is that this SC was quibbling over 58 cents. OK, so maybe she needed that change for gas or whatever, but it's not worth insulting people. And I wish all cashiers had the power to just mark it down to get her out of there. I do.

Problem with that is that SCs then expect a store do it all the time and it just reinforces the SC attitude. It does suck having to deal with trifling people like this jam lady.

even on a tight budget, she has choices; take the jam and pay the extra, get another jam at $1.99, get the one cheaper jam or leave with nothing.

but, we all know sc mentality.

I will say that I did think she was being racist. It was just the way she glanced at her and the tone she had. And I did see on the news today that the company that owns my store has filed for chapter 11.

Thanks for clarifying. The judgement call on this is far easier for you to make as you have the experience.
