  • Nice Try, Folks

So, at the wholesale club, we sell these 5-gallon jugs of water, which come with a $5 deposit. When the jug is empty, you bring it back and get a $5 voucher at the front door, which you can use at the registers like cash.

Thus, the FDLP guys keep careful tabs on those empties, and it's extremely difficult to scam us on them. We know how many bottles are on there at a glance, and you can't dupe us into thinking those three bottles on the top of the stack are yours when we know they aren't.

Nonetheless, a couple tried that tonight. Hoss was on the door, giving CR a break. Scammer Couple comes in and, in the middle of a minor rush, linger near the bottles just long enough to register in Hoss' head, but then go up to the desk and claim that he never gave them their bottle vouchers. Hoss, when questioned by the desk, insists they never brought in any bottles. SCs leave, apparently defeated.

Not so. Later in the night, while we're doing carts, Hoss gets called inside about the situation, and again defends himself. CR backs him up, and points out that if the SCs had brought in any bottles, and Hoss had failed to give them their vouchers, it would be on camera.

This thwarts the SCs, who skulk off into the club to do their shopping, voucher-less.

For $5?? It never fails to amaze me how some people will pull this crap for such small amounts.

      The amount involved is irrelevant.

The only thing that's important is that the scammers are putting one over on someone and getting something they don't deserve and didn't earn.

It's bad enough that the SC's tried to scam but the part that really kills me is:

Management should have banned them from the store.

They should have. Employees are getting treated worse and worse these days.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

Has anyone ever encountered an honest customer who recanted their complaint when told that there was video of the incident to prove who was right? "Let's check the video tapes" sounds like the best litmus test of sucky customer-tude.

And yeah, that management allowed these would-be thieves to shop that day (or any other after that) also sucks.
