I hit up our store's page on a certain review website (named for a sound effect) every so often, to make sure there aren't any legit complaints. We've had one vague complaint from someone who just sounded... snarky. Her complaint was vague, and basically boiled down to "I don't like the staff." So I mostly dismissed it, being the only negative review we've ever gotten.

Well, today I looked at the page again, to see that she'd updated her review. This time, her complaint was a bit more specific. Not only have I been accused of being "pretentious," but this person (who has lived in areas where wine is "part of the culture") has gotten THREE bad bottles from here. No mention of what bottles they are, how much she paid, or whether they were actually bad (oxidized, corked, or vinegar), or just not to her liking. She also demanded that I be fired for being pretentious.

I think I may know who she is. And if I'm right, her opinion is due entirely to her own attitude. I may be an unapologetic wine geek, but I'm not pretentious. Nor do I think someone "needs a PhD to drink wine."

If it wasn't for her, we'd have a 5-star review.

    I love bad reviewers.

I once got a bad review for selling a customer a bad part. The trick was, it WAS bad- we labeled it as "bad board, selling as-is for core."

    Boggling, some people!

Not quite so bad, but the only non-positive feedback I've ever received on eBay was a neutral for a hard drive I sold. I listed it "as-is, hasn't worked for me but might work for someone else, don't know if it's even functional or was dead straight from the box" (to paraphrase). Listed it cheap, and had a buyer. The neutral review mentioned everything about the transaction positively, but the drive was dead. I didn't mind, since it was just a neutral and didn't hurt my score any, but had it been a negative I would've given a feedback response pointing out that the listing mentioned its possible not-workingness.

Something similar happened to me this week (sorry for the threadjack). We sell books, mostly offline, but also on Ebay & Half.com. On Half.com, the shipping price is set by Half.com, I have no control over it (this is IMPORTANT!)

Got a request from someone that wanted 10 of a pamphlet that costs $1 each, but they were upset that the shipping cost would be $20. I explained that Half.com sets the shipping price, not me. I explained this not once, not twice, but in three emails (in response to their continued complaints). Here is a copy/paste of the last email they sent me:

"ok ..thank you for that explanation. Only someone crazy would pay $40 for 10 pamphlets. Your shipping charges are excessive. I am no longer interested in buying anything from your auction. Please..no need to respond,Im done"

HUH? First you said it was $20 for shipping and now all of a sudden it's $40??? And you thank me for the explanation, but you clearly didn't read or understand it. MY shipping price is excessive? When it's sent by Half.com, not ME??????

Oh and by the way, it wasn't an auction.... it was a fixed price listing on Half.com.

Isn't that fun? There are some days I just love selling on eBay.
