ok, i work at an electronics store, big tvs, computers, thousand dollar sales, blah blah. so, wouldn't you want me checking your id for a very large transaction? ya know, to make sure someone didn't steal your card and was having a field day? well one day this man makes a purchase (granted it wasn't huge, but still...) so i ask him for his id. instead he gets extremely flustered and yells (yes, actually raises his voice at me like i'm ten) that i am invading his personal rights, and that i'm violating his credit card's merchant agreement, yada yada. unfortunately in that situation i can't force him to show his id (store merchant agreement with credit cards is that we cannot ask for id unless the card isn't signed or the purchase is over 60$). and then!! get this!! we have a little online survey you can fill out, and he was more than happy to rant and rave about how we violated his personal rights by checking his id. my theory is, he's either a thief or just a jerk. i hope his card gets stolen one day and no one checks for the id.

What a yoid.
Mine isn't signed. Because instead of signing it, I wrote "Please request ID" on the back of it. In all honestly, most clerks don't ask for ID anyway. So when they do, I say, Thank you for asking for that. Most don't." Hell, YEAH, I want my ID checked. Who wouldn't? Oh, yeah, that's right. An idiot.

Of course, by the terms of VISA and Mastercard, a credit card isn't valid unless it's signed, "See ID" and the like are not valid options....but this always starts a huge argument so I shouldn't have mentioned it.
Personally, I would not accept an unsigned credit card, no matter what spectacular ID the person produced.A person who is nice to you, but not nice to the waiter is not a nice person

I didn't sign my debit card, nor any of my credit cards. They all say "see photo ID", and I always have my driver's license on hand to prove that the name on the card matches the name on the driver's license of the beautiful blonde that's..me lol...
I think carding people for ciggs/beer/lotto is worse than asking for ID for checks/credit cards, but it's a pretty close match. People act as though you have killed and then drowned the body of their firstborn child if you dare ask them for ID, and boy, some people, when I carded them for ciggs, acted like I'd just stolen their car and crashed it into a wall. You really need to see a neurologist. - Wagegoth

Not signing your card is actually pretty silly. It's incredibly easy to get some sort of photo ID with another person's name on it. Much harder to get a bank card faked up accurately.
Instead of putting 'ask for ID' sign your name and then add 'ask for ID' afterwards. That way you cover all your bases. Will you $*&£ing mind the $*&£ing doors!

Threadjack
We have a new KFC in the neighborhood. I've never been a big fan of theirs but never really had anything against them just not my first choice. Anyways I like to use the drivethru, I order and when it's my turn and pay with my check card and the kid asks for my ID. It's a little difficult to get to my ID but I retrieve it and then he just hands me my card, food, thanks me and closes the window and never looked at my ID. I think the kid doesn't understand his whole training but oh well and proceed about by day.
Next time same thing as well as the third, fourth, and fifth times. I'm getting a little ticked as it's not easy nor comfortable to retrieve my ID in the sitting position. This has been with a different kid everytime.
Before I ask a window kid why, I'll pose the question here. My check card is signed, the purchase amount is 5 to 6 bucks, so why would they ask for my ID and never look at it?

I work in a little store, so I always check for ID when people are paying with checks or debit/credit cards. Surprisingly, I haven't gotten yelled at or lectured or anything (knock on wood!). Some people actually thanked me for looking at their ID, yeah, it's just a habit I gotten myself into (plus, I think it's store policy). I have seen a couple of those debit cards that do have, "see ID" written on the back instead of signature (there's actually a good percentage of people that do that), although they do have to sign the receipt, so we can compare signatures that way. This area is left blank for a reason.

I swear whoever writes this must read this forum. I mean, this came out before this thread, but generally speaking it's classic SC stuff.

I saw a sign at the local (US) Post Office a while back that basically said they would not accept a credit card unless it had been signed. They won't accept it if it says "CID". And I've seen them refuse a few because of that, too! It's floating wicker propelled by fire!

I've had people bit** me out because their card is too worn for me to read the signature, or the signature doesn't match what they signed and I ask for I.D. I even pointed out to one guy that its to make sure the card isn't stolen, and isn't it good incase that ever happens. His reply? "Its an inconvience for those of us who haven't stolen cards" I tell him "How can I tell the difference?" His wife says to her husband "He's got a point."
Another guy said to a friend of his when I asked for ID (it said see ID on the back of the card) "I spend $2000 at Radio Shack, they don't check my ID, $20 here, they check." He said it in kind of an amused way, not annoyed.
Last story. A man both signed his card, and put see ID on it. I only compared the back and the slip, I didn't ask for ID. He tells me "You're supposed to check for ID." I inform him that as long as the signature on the back of the card and on the slip match, I don't have to check ID. His friend agrees with me.

Actually it's getting better. Did you know that some banks (Bank of America for one) are now issuing credit/debit cards with a photo of the card holder imprinted on it.
Now if Billy-Bob Redneck gets my card they can see that it's not me.
Don't know how much it'll help in the long run, but it;s a good start
