  • Are You Being Sarcastic?

The other day, a customer wanted to know if we had pet safe rock salt. Since I didn't have any customers in my line at the time, I went to check but we ran out. I offered to call another store and the customer suggested the store I transferred from. I dialed from the service desk and transferred the call to my register since I was the only one open. It turned out that the other store had it but they only had one. Another customer came up and I had trouble with focusing on both so I handed the phone to the pet safe rock salt customer since she'd be able to explain it better.

The customer I was ringing up told her children to stay where they were since they were acting up. The customer complained that she'd been waiting in line for twenty minutes and that she wanted to get out of the store so I quickly rang up her items. She asked me if I was being sarcastic, that her 10 year old son was acting that way, and that she also didn't need it from me. I let her know that I was trying to hurry and the rest of the transaction went pretty smoothly.

How could she have been waiting in line for twenty minutes if you were the only register open, and until she arrived, you'd only had the one customer to deal with? Maybe the silly moo had been queuing at a closed register...

Whatever her problem was, she was rude to you.

sounds like she was stressed out
but to the point where she's projecting everything at other people.

She was in the SC time zone, which has no direct correlation to real time.

I've occasionally had a customer ask if I was being sarcastic when I wasn't. This is most likely to happen if the customer feels I'm being inconvenienced some way (like taking a huge stack of coupons in the example below) and I can't hide the fact I'm flustered or upset from being so busy/running around/etc. My being flustered has nothing to do with the customer in front of me and I'm very polite, but they assume I'm being sarcastic instead of pleasant. For example:

Me: (zipping through the line as fast as possible)
SC: (hands me a stack of coupons) Do I give these to you?
Me: Sure! Wow, good for you saving so much!
                  SC: Are you being sarcastic?
A lion however, will only devour your corpse, whereas an SC is not sated until they have destroyed your soul. (Quote per infinitemonkies)

They make a snow and ice melter out of something that is safer for pets to walk on when used correctly. Doesn't irritate their little feet as badly as most commercial ice melters. We sell it (or used to, out for the season) at work.

you know cat litter is also good.
granted it doesn't melt the snow but it provides some traction
and it's safe for cats and dogs to walk on already

AAAAAH, I get it now. Sorry.
I was kind of imagining it'd be related to pets ingesting the thing rather than walking on it. Yes, sorry.

This actually makes a lot of sense. Or, I'd guess, very simple sand.

Did anyone else read that as Pet Rock safe salt? I was truly confused as to why anyone would sell that.

Although if anyone has pet rocks anymore, there might be a market for it.
