There's one thing everyone here seems to be forgetting.

    SGA said,
I don't have time to watch the news, you paranoid, gullible fuckwit, because I'm always standing HERE selling you your damn meds.
If I'm dispensing medications for this person, I already have her zip code on file. Not to mention her address, telephone number, date of birth, list of allergies, drug history, maybe a stored credit card number, and quite possibly (especially if she's on Medicare) her social security number as well.

If I were a crook looking to steal someone's identity, I've already got more than enough to do her properly without having to ask her for her damn zip code.

But they never realize that, do they. Probably a good thing, too.

But really. I don't want to track you.
No, you don't. But chances are good that if your employer is asking for zip codes, they do. And as you are a representative of the company, she is well within her rights to point this out to you.

Even if the customer was being a total fuckwit about making that point to you.

        Hey guys..

Lets get this back on track, ok? We need to re-focus on the attitude of the customer and stay away from the legalities and various issues regarding data collection.

        Thanks!

Without going too far back off track, I bet that she also forgot the part on TV where gas stations are still allowed to do this because they don't keep the information; they just verify it with the CC company.

But it would be funny to see her yelling at the pump!

Even funnier would be if the pump came to life and it either a) started yelling back at the woman or b) hit her upside the head with the pump handle.

Now that would be instant karma.

I didn't know that was a security thing. I always figured it was for tracking purposes, like "people from these towns all shop here". I guess it's a good thing I don't care and didn't give fake zip codes then.
If a store is asking for zip codes on all purchases regardless of the form of payment then it's for tracking only and any zip code will work. If they are asking for a zip code just for credit card purchases do to a prompt then it's for security and the transaction will only go through if the correct zip is entered.

I haven't read the new CA law but I was told that asking for a zip code due to a security prompt was exempt from the new law. Don't know if that's true but if it is then even if this took place in CA the lady would still have been wrong.

I can verify that some cards have security set high enough that they will not go through at all without the correct ZIP.

I can also verify that, frighteningly enough, there are others with security so lax, that even if you put in the wrong expiration date, they'll still be approved. O.o

I have seen someone yell at the pump when it wouldn't take their fake ZIP. They then yelled at the cashier and speed off to a station down the road. Th station down the road, sells a different brand of fuel, but is owned by the same company, so they will get asked for a valid billing ZIP again.

When I fill up my car sometimes the gas pumps ask for my zip code. It's to ensure that it's ME cuz only I should know the billing zip code to my card. Usually. I don't care about that kind of shit cuz where I work regardless of what you don't think we know, we do. There is no privacy at a casino.

The only times I've ever been asked for my postcode (Zip code) are when I'm at the library and at one of the grocery clearance stores (you know the type-the ones that sell discontinued lines of food?). Because I live in the same area as those two, I have no problem giving mine out.

When I know they are doing it for tracking purposes, I tell them 90210, its a game Mr. Corporate Suit, your move. Both me and your minion have complied with your wishes, were the results satisfactory?

Side note: I HATE AMEX!!!!!! For some reason their customers must never get gas because I tell the same people the same thing all the time

It's not the card, it's the security on the card reader.

Because the merchant processing companies charge more if the security code, zip code, & expiration date don't match, some companies have it set to not go through at all if one of the above is off.

Well your customer was an SC for sure.....

Now that said, when I worked at 'The Shack years ago I asked the DM what was the purpose of asking for ZIP codes. She said that a lot of retailers do it because if many people come into a store and live in a certain ZIP code (or group of ZIP codes as one town may have several), the head honchos at corporate will look at that and see it as a business case to try and build a store there.

                                Just an insight here....
