Unfortunately my company has the policy of sometimes, but not always, but then again not never of matching prices of the competition.
Now you may be asking yourself, what exactly that means. Well it means that it's just enough of the time that we will do it,but not often enough that it's a promise. Which translates into just enough confusion, that depending on what manager you ask to do the price match, they will either say "No" or "Well what are they buying" to just giving in because they don't feel like dealing with the customers.
But my favorites are when they come in to tell me that a $20 item is actually $18 at some other store and that "No I didn't bring the ad,but you can look it up online.
"
Now sometimes I might, depending on the customer, but when they have already shown an attitude I simply explain that it's not our job to save them money if they're too lazy to print out the ad at home. Albeit in nicer terms.
I have actually had products that were simply cheaper in another store, but we couldn't match because it's below our cost,I.E. we'd lose money if we sold it at that price. On top of that I've had other customers that will tell me if I can't give it to them for that $5 less then they'll go to XXX Store and buy it there. Funny thing is that they XXX store is across a toll bridge in another state and a good 45 minutes to get to. I laugh when they leave thinking how much they're actually going to spend to "save" $5.
