  • Mildly sucky

I know I haven't had much to post in a while, but things have been pretty quiet in the store lately.

Today However, there was a MIld issue. It could probably have ended up in Brain Burps if not for the end.

The meat guy pages "customer help in Dairy" so I head up tward the milk doors, after a minute or so and old woman comes up and goes...

    OL: are you in Dairy?
DDD: Yes how may i help you?
OL: Why are you selling old milk!?!?
    DDD: Excuse me?
OL: you have expired milk on the shelves!
DDD: ok can you show me where you saw it?
    * the OL guestures tward the bottom of the Half Gallon Milk doors*
DDD: Ma'am I Dont see any out of date milk?
OL: Yes there is they are dated the 11th and todays the 12th
DDD: ma'am I see the 20th and the 24th and a couple of 14th's but no 11ths (store brand Whole milk, half gallon for those keeping score)
OL: RIGHT HERE! *points at the Prairie Farms half gallon whole milk*
DDD: Ma'am those say the 26th, in the year 2011 (date read 3/26/11)
OL: *Pauses for about 10 seconds, opens door picks up jug, brings it close looks at the date closely then tturns and says...

WHY DO THEY HAVE TO MAKE THE DATES SO HARD TO READ!!!!

it was all i could do to keep from laughing at her.
Lister: This is Crazy. Why are we talking about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone?
Cat: You're right. We're Nuts! This is an insane conversation....
Lister: She'll never leave Fred and we know it.

Because, clearly, the most commonly used way of writing a date (mm/dd/yyyy) is too difficult to comprehend. Wow. I would've had to force myself not to laugh too!

Oddly enough, I tend to write dates as US notation in shorthand (mm/dd/yy), but Aussie/Euro notation when writing dates out (dd mmm, yyyy) >_> No quite sure why.

I was under the impression that there was an international standard (yyyy mm dd), which seems like a logical way to do it (like with time - start with the biggest unit and work down). Of course, I only know of 2 people who use that standard - myself and my mother.

Alright, I stand corrected...the US Standard way of writing a date then. There are several ways of doing that, I guess. I knew that, too, but I figured...Well anyway. The woman was still...less than bright.

Old computer programmer here. Lots of computer people ue that method, including me. Name all your files with that date format at the beginning of the file name, and your files are automatically chronological

I only WISH there was an international standard. That way dates like 3/10/11 wouldn't be either 10 March 2011 or 3 October 2011 or October 11 2003 (yes, one of our clients does their dates this way, it's insane!).

Was that project done in March, will be done in October, or was it done in 2003? Pick one, dammit! It's worse than Daylight Savings time!

The US Military does dates mm/dd/yyyy, just like the rest of the world does.

Here it is usually dd/mm/yy. Today is 13-03-11. I think the mm/dd/yy is only used in USA and Canada.
Oh, there is a nice table here. There are a few other places, but it seems that the d/m/y are the most widely used.

mm/dd/yy is only used in Canada because of the influence of the US. The official format is dd/mm/yy. And the ISO international standard is yyyy-mm-dd.

Which, as Merriweather said, makes more sense for computers than the others. A lot of confusion would be avoided if we all changed to that.
When I look at Wikipedias table, I'm glad I don't live in Saudi Arabia. Apparently they use both M/D/Y and D/M/Y. It must be a nightmare to guess a date lower than 13.
