I've been a long time lurker and here's my first post.................


I manage an auto repair shop. We have a strict policy that we will not sell or mount used tires. All the old tires we dismount are put in a corner of the shop and at the end of the day we take them to a locked storage shed next to the building. We always get customers wanting to buy the old tires, but for liability reason, the owner refuses.

Well today I was accused of being a racist because of it.

here it goes........


SW1: Service writer
M: me
RCC: Race card customer


RCC walks up to the sales are and asks SW1 " Y'all sell tires"

SW1 " yes we do, for what kind of vehicle?"
RCC " Well I need a used 225/75r15"
SW1 " Sorry, we do not sell or install used tires, but I will gladly give you a quote on a new one"

RCC " Thats bullshits, y'all have a bunch of old tires just sitting there inside the garage"

SW1 " sorry, yes they are old tires, they might be good, but the owners of the shop have a very strict policy on that subject, and like the sign right above my head says, NO used tire sales or installs. No exceptions!

RCC " I want to talk to tha man in charge"

I was right next to SW1 so I just say

" Whats the problem? what don't you understand ? No used tires. Hell , if I we caught giving you an old tire, we will be terminated on the spot." (which the shop get charged per tire from a tire disposal company, so giving them away would be to the owners advantage)

RCC " It's because I'm black, isn't"

M "No , because it says it right above my and SW1's heads"

RCC "You're a racist"

M " you can call me whatever you want, but you still are not getting a used tire from this shop, so you cn A) buy a new one or B) leave......."

RCC " All you crackers are all the same. "

M " Well I guess we are if we follow the rules the owners of the business HAVE MADE"

RCC " Yeah, and that rule is not to help a poor black man out"

Then he walked away.

Nice thing to happen in a room full of customers on a busy Monday

Race card doesn't always work. Same goes with the Gender, or other sexuality cards.

What ticks me off about stories like these is that the customer doesn't even care if someone gets fired for doing what they want. Why should his wanting to buy a used tire be more important than you keeping your job?

Perhaps, but since that sign above us cannot see at all, it is not racist and still says not to sell used tires.

What ticks me off about stories like these is that the customer doesn't even care if someone gets fired for doing what they want. Why should his wanting to buy a used tire be more important than you keeping your job?

I often want to be ironic(and sort of an jerk) and say, the fact I'm a racist has nothing to do with the fact I have to follow company policy and state law when selling cigarettes and that you need to provide ID since you look under 30. It doesn't matter that said individual watches me ID several white people in front of him, im still get the comment that I'm a racist, even funnier is the fact he provides an ID from 5 states away, has out of state plates, IE not from around here so its not like he is a regular that I should know and is only a year above the legal age.

I love when when a coworker with a black boyfriend, and a mixed child was called a racist so it was time to pull out pictures and ask "excuse me?" here is my family

I have a feeling, that if he *was* sold a used tire and it failed, causing him to hit a tree, the first thing he'd do is to come into the shop and scream about how "whitey" screwed him over

Seriously though, I can understand about the cost of some tires. That's why my MG currently wears a set of Yokohamas, rather than the correct Michelins. I wasn't about to put expensive tires on a car that isn't driven much. As it is, the tires would decay from dry rot long before they'd actually wear But this guy is just a cheap bastard.
