  • Safety Day My BUTT

So my place of employment was sponsoring a Safety Day that was held in the parking lot of a Rec Center run by the local Fire Department and EMS units. They were pretty much just having a day where they check car seats, show little kids around the fire trucks and Ambulances and they were even going to have a police helicopter come and fly in and have pictures taken with it and everything.

The day before this occurs the local crazy guy (he walks up and down the main drag yelling at cars and talking a mile a minute to nobody imparticular all day everyday) come up to me, grabs my arm and starts talking.

Now when this guy talks it's...confusing. Like I can't understand a word he says and he's never touched me before so to have him grab me and spin me around when I have my music going is just disorienting. Honestly somebody needs to be keeping an eye on him. I finally get my music off and just nod to everything he's screaming about until he finally just shakes his head (he knows I can't understand him) and walks away. Turns out he was trying to tell me he'd be at Safety Day.

    Joy.

So my partner and I get to Safety Day and not only is he there but the OTHER crazy guy is there (this one is easier to understand and much more polite but for the life of me I can't get him to tell me his name.) Essentially these two are just scaring the living daylights out of little kids who want to see the fire trucks, so much that you can SEE the terror in their eyes as they stare at them (they're loud and they make unpredictable movements). It was nice though when they left and the kids could relax and wear the little foam crowns we were handing out.

EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Of those children said "Thank you" at the urging of their parents. So cute.

But on to more suck. Literally this is called Safety Day and people were driving in and out of this parking lot and there were kids everywhere. Now this is an event for children, DON'T DRIVE THROUGH THE EVENT. Holy nuggets, there was a whole nother exit that didn't cut right through the event! Still people were just like rocketing through this crowded area filled with toddlers and their parents!

And a kid who was way old enough to know better almost jumped out in the middle of the street because the wind had blown something away from him. Seriously if the EMS lady hadn't screamed at the last second for him to stop, he could have been FLATTENED.

Safety Day...HAH. But I got my picture taken with a Helicopter!

I like helicopters. Years and years ago they used to have helicopter rides at the county fair (cost $15 at the time) and I LOVED it. Unfortunately they had to stop having those due to insurance costs.

Why didn't they have that one exit blocked off so no one could drive through your event?

I wonder why the police, if they were present, didn't stop those idiots and told them of(even better fine them) because of the hazards arisen.

Kids are known to not think rationally, that's why kids can't be put responsible for their actions until they age 11-12 years.

And THAT'S why motorists have to take big caution and slow down when driving through residential areas or schools.

When my kids were little I had an insane fear of them being hit by cars and kept a grip on them going across streets and through parking lots. If they got away from me they were subjected to me screaming to get back to me and hold on. They all managed to survive!

I rode in a helicopter once years and years ago....even though I"m afraid of heights it was actually kind of cool cause I felt secure in the thing.....go figure.

One of the few things that I've always wanted to do that I have never done is ride in a helicopter. I want I want I want!

As for the event, I have to wonder why the cops, who were running a safety event, did not run off the crazy guys scaring the children OR have the road blocked off to protect the children. Seems like someone wasn't doing their job very well at all....

Actually I'm afraid of heights and fly in a small plane pretty regularly, so is the pilot I fly with, I've also met several fighter pilots who have said are afraid of heights too. It's surprisingly normal.

They used to have them at the one amusement pier in Wildwood, but they charged $75. I've never been in a helicopter either, and it seems like it would be fun. But no way was I paying $75 for it (or $225 for myself, my wife, and my son.) Apparently no one else wanted to either, because it didn't last. There's nothing but an empty section of the pier, with letters missing from the sign. Maybe next year I'll check out the "he icopter ides."

I actually read something about this oddity. If you can't see something that gives you a constant diminishing line to the ground, the brain doesn't trigger the phobia. Thus, 300' building roof = fear, but an airplane at 5000' generates none. It doesn't work on everyone with a hieght phobia, which has a lot of psychologists and scientists studying brain functions really scrathing their heads.

I've been in a plane where I'm looking straight down out of the window on my right due to the turn we are doing and felt no fear. It was funny, when I talked to the fighter pilots they had said they were surprised too, they were all initially nervous that they would have a problem and they said from day one in a plane they had no problem. I think part of it is you KNOW whats going on, you have control. I normally recommend to people who are afraid to fly to go in a small plane, you can land faster if you are afraid, the pilot will explain things and you have that control. Or I tell them that there is an A-10 Thunderbolt II Pilot plus others out there who are afraid of heights. (yay Warthog! btw I totally went all fangirl on the poor guy...I got his autograph I was at work at the time too, I'm never going to live that down but I made his day I think.)

Taht makes me think that only some are afraid of heights, while the others have similar but different phobias, such as vertigo.

Vertigo isn't a phobia its when you get dizzy even if you aren't moving, trust me vertigo and fear of heights are completely different I've experienced both. Myself like the ones I mentioned are very afraid of heights. I will freak the heck out on a ladder to the point of being in tears, unless my feet are firmly on the ground, I'm not happy, I also can't go into light houses for some reason, even just being on stairs, I can't do it. I went on my first flight expecting to feel the same, while I was nervous I didn't freak out at all.
