  • Rabbits are supposed to love Easter!

Hello everyone! This is my first thread. So it is the end of the first week of the Easter half-term break in the UK, and although I am certainly not new to this phenomenon, I am certainly very sick of children now. I am certainly NOT looking forward to another week of this stuff... Oh WHY did I accept the overtime!?

Oh yeah, because I need the monies

    Well, this week, the children have gone feckin' nuts. I mean, we're used to badly behaved kids and chavvy parents (I live in a very "chavtastic" part of the UK, although I don't expect many Americans to get that...look up "Vicky Pollard" of "Little Britain"...I've seen BBC America, I know you've been exposed to it ) anyway, but I guess all that Easter chocolate and possibly even mild sunstroke due to the lovely weather is just making them worse. Over the course of the week, we've had to put up a sign stating that "children must be supervised" due to their unrulyness, really step up on our normally-ignored ban of food and drink in the shop (the mess has been disgusting), and finally, we've had to ban scooters. Not mobility ones, but those stupid things that are a cross between a bike and skateboard. They've been around since I was a wee bunny, but they are all the rage again for some reason. We normally ask that kids just push their scooters about the shop, but many insist on speeding around as fast as they can, and the inevitable happened this week when one little snot ran right over the assistant manager's foot, inciting rage ^^;;

It's a shame actually, because we understand theft is a problem and don't expect people to leave them outside, but we do also expect them not to go mowing down the staff

Yesterday, a 6-year-old boy had a furious tantrum, the like I don't regularly see, because his mother was insisting on buying him a cheaper t-shirt than the one he so desired. After his tears and screaming seemed to have no affect on her (as she was ignoring him like a a duitiful parent! [/sarcasm]) he decided to trash our kids department instead, knocking clothing off the racks and onto the floor, where he stamped and screamed and generally acted like a little monster. All the while his mother continued to ignore him.

And today a toddler decided to smack me! I saw him toddling about (unattended by mum) and carrying a very large ready-to-spill-any-second milkshake and I said "Hey there hon, you can't drink that in here. Can you put the top back on please?" His brother helped him, but he seemed so reproachful that I added "You're a good boy, thank you for doing that". Lets face it, no need to jump to conclusions, he didn't seem to know better after all! Didn't want him to feel like he was told off. Well a couple of minutes later, he was sitting in a chair, and as I walked past him, he grinned and then smacked me on the arm. Of course, being such a small child, it was more like a tap. I gave him a sort of expression, but said nothing. Mother-dearest did nothing, of course. A tad a worrying really...his smacks don't hurt now, but they WILL one day!

So yes, Retail Rabbit is not child-friendly at this time. I have another week of this yet >.<

So um...yes that was all I had with to begin, but going by past experiences, I'm sure I'll have more, and more interesting, stories to share.

It can be rough when you're overwhelmed with them.

I've had quite a few screamers in my line. They're not nearly as annoying as the oh so helpful shoppers who make their little unwelcome comments to the parents about spankings and "in my day we didnt" crap.

Scooters, wheellies and skateboards. I hope your AM wasn't injured, but I am still glad the kids ran over AM's foot. Why else would management lay down the law? And be glad that was all that happened. At *big box retail* we had a few customers mowed down, not to mention kids injuring themselves when they fell poorly or cracked into a shelf edge.

        But we didn't!

I'm not so sure. The last time we had an Easter bunny in the store, it looked like it was ready to hang itself by the time it was finished with all the crying, almost potty-trained kids.

I felt so sorry for the schmuck who had to don the costume. I spent the entire day wondering who he/she had pissed off.

I have an auto response now of turning to them and saying sternly "We Do Not Hit" (capitals for emphasis) whether they're trying to do it to me or each other.

Usually either their so shocked a stranger told them No they straighten out for a bit or it gets their parents to, you know, parent

My cousin's kid (second cousin then?) was still actively biting people at 3 years old. My dad told my cousin that if his kid bit him, he'd bite back.

Those guys makes some nice bank in the malls. And as I had to grow up with four younger brothers, it'd be nice to get peed on and actually be paid for it.

That could so easily be misinterpreted.

Good! There is NO REASON for kids to be wheeling about in a store on those things. If the parents can't keep them out in the car or at home, fuck 'em. Seriously. If I were the owner of a retail store, why on earth would I want to take the chance of being held liable for some little hellion injuring himself because I allowed kids to use skateboards-with-handles in the store? Hell, I've seen signs in some stores that ban heelies (those shoes with wheels in them), and I have no issue with that, either. Their business, their rules. (As long as those rules are for safety, hygiene, and security issues, not the kind designed to keep the [insert your favorite often abused minority] out.)

Riiiiiight. What management school dropout came up with that idea? Seriously, like kids are ever going to listen to that? Hell, in COLLEGE, when we were banned from doing anything but walking our bicycles up certain malls, we still rode them. Why? Because we could, and because we were young and obnoxious. (Yes, some of us got tickets. That was about the only thing that slowed us down, though.)

Honestly, short of banning them, the least I would think a store would do would be something along the lines of: "Scooters must be left with the staff behind the front desk. No scooters allowed on the store floor." Just like the college bookstore did with backpacks when I was there....and probably still does.

                    ,

I would too, if I were a kid with a scooter. The problem is not the kids. Well, it IS the problem, but not where the blame lies. That lies squarely at the feet of the parents. Who are clearly not doing their job.

THAT is not the inevitable. The inevitable is when one of them loses control and crashes into a display, causing damage to merchandise and possibly injury to others or him/herself.

Or they could check them with the front desk/leave them in the car/not bring them into the store to begin with. Parents. Right. Like these idiots have earned that honorable title.

Jester, definately not bad suggestions, but we are a small store and we don't have room to store kids' bikes and things behind our counter; we'd probably get more bollocked for health and safety reasons for doing that than letting the kids just go nuts! It's also the sort of precinct that people visit out of convenience, rather than because they would like to visit it (it's a sh*thole to be honest ^^;; ) so you'll have people passing through, having walked there from another part of town rather than have driven there. Having said that though, I'd be terrified if I had kids walking all over town with me if they were on bikes and scooters- they'd be forever zooming out of sight and then coming back!

In that case, Rabbit, you as a store are well within your rights to ban the scooters altogether. Frankly, I don't see a problem with it.

"But my child would never cause problems with his scooter..."

Yeah, fuck you lady. Shut up and control your brat.
