  • Bad day

So I work in a toy store that also sells some baby items. We had a sale going on where if you buy baby formula you got a free 30 dollar gift card. For some reason our computers were messed up and would only offer a 10 dollar gift car. So any time that would happen a manager would just take 20 dollars off the customers bill and then issue the customer a 10 dollar gift card. Most people were understanding and it was no big deal. So I had this lady go through my line and was purchasing the formula. I hadn't worked all week so I didn't know about the sign messing up. This is how the conversation went down:

Me: hello. How are you today?
    Sc: *rolls eyes*
I just start scanning her stuff and continue to try and make small talk.
Me: ok your total is 95 dollars and you get a 10 dollar gift card.
Sc: I knew this was going to happen! I'm suppose to get a 30 dollar gift card.
Me: ok. Well let me get someone to check the sales sign for you.
Sc: no ma'am! Didn't you hear me?!? I was told that I get a 30 dollar gift card. Everytime I come in hear you people always have to mess something up. I'm an educated woman! I can read signs!
Apparently while she was looking at the formula my manager had told her that our computers were messing up and she could still get the correct sale. She just needed to tell the cashier to ask for a manager and they would fix it. Somehow I was suppose to know this even though I've been on the register the whole time.
So I call a manger up to fix the problem. He quickly fixed it and then apologized for the computer glitch. I thought that was the end.
Sc: do you know how to do your job?
    Me: yes ma'am. I believe I do.
Sc: well obviously not! How do you not know the sales?
Me: well we have at least 25 different sales going on at the same time. I can't remember all the sales but I'm sorry about the formula mix up.
Sc: I am an educated woman and I know that not all of the people who come in this store are as smart as me. I think its horrible customer service that you guys would take advantage of those people that didn't catch the sign.
Me: I'm sorry again about the mix up. Have a good afternoon.
Sc: you know the only reason you have this job is because your not educated enough to get a real job!
I just looked at her. I have this cashier job because its paying for my college classes. A jobs a job. I have no shame in being a cashier.
She then proceeded to ask for my manager to make a complaint against me. She told him that he needed to hire smarter cashiers because I was trying to rip her off but I didn't cause she was smarter than me. She probably repeated that she was an educated woman at least 10 more times. I wish people would spend a day behind the cash register and realize that my job isn't as easy as it looks.

*hugs* Yeah, I really do wish people who have never done our jobs could swap places with us for a day.. Then they'd see how annoying they are.

It seems like those who brag the most about how smart they are, are actually the dumbest people.

Sorry you had to deal with that crap, bbaaww13.

She is just a sad, miserable person. Sorry you had to deal with that. In my job we are supposed to remember everything or else somehow make it appear to the customer that we do...and then put them on hold while we "research". Why can't we just say we don't know but would be happy to find out? Ugh. Anyway, enjoy the boards, we are all on your side!!

You hit the nail on the head.

If she were really as educated as she claims to be, she'd know any honest job that pays REAL money for REAL work is, in fact, a REAL job.

I think we've all heard similar comments thrown at us over the years. To me, all these people who do that are the same: pathetic and ignorant.

"Ma'am, you may be educated but you're still an ass."

Jeeez. Lady, the guy made a mistake. Get over yourself, woman!

Oh, and btw . . . any job where you get paid for honest labor is a real job.

Thanks guys! I'm proud that I have a job and that I'm putting myself through college. I wanted to ask her so bad what she considered a "real" job.

Unfortunately, the moment she'd start insulting me like that, I know my brain to mouth filter would fail. I'd automatically respond with, "Educated doesn't equal intelligent, ma'am."

she started off as a total bitch and ended up the same; nothing you could have done would have changed her attitude. as everyone else said, she's a miserable being seeking to make others around her suffer as much as 'she does.'

educated? apparently, you're hearing impaired as well as thinking impaired; how hard is it to tell a clerk that the manager told you x and have that confirmed. also, throwing a big tantrum over something easily fixed; life requires a different type of learning that you have FAILED at.
                  look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

If she's that rude, demanding, arrogant and nasty, she hasn't been educated in anything she should have been. Comes across as stupid, to me.

I'm assuming that her extensive education didn't include charm and etiquette. Maybe you should get her to complain to her place of learning - they obviously did a rush job.

Sorry you had to deal with that harpy. I'd rather deal with a polite high school dropout than a college educated asshole. Learning =/= class.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

I have $20.00 that says she wouldn't last half a day working that register. Any takers?

csquared-- I don't take sucker bets.

As for the woman bitch, I'd have been hard pressed not to say something like "I wasn't aware a GED made one THAT intelligent" just to see her reaction. I'm kinda mean/vindictive sometimes though.
