This is less sucky than it could be because I managed to entirely "misunderstand" her and yet still get my point across.
SC: We like this water service but we've been paying rental on this cooler for 5 years and we want to stop paying it.
Me:Oh, so you want to return the cooler and continue the water service?
SC: No, we want to stop paying the rental.
Me:*note:many customers think that at some point we should just give them the cooler and I know this is what she's angling for and I hate this conversation because these people are entitlement whores* Yes, when you rent the cooler-as when you rent any item-you pay rent each moth. The major benefit of renting is that we are responsible for the maintenance. Even if you just feel that you'd like a newer model we will replace it free of charge. But if you prefer you can purchase the cooler for a one time fee.
SC:Well, we've rented this cooler for 5 years and...*clicking noises, apparently in some calculator or...is that...an adding machine!?*...$5 times...12...times...5 is....um...*click click click*...yeah...a lot...*she honestly said that*
Me: Yes, when you rent you pay a rental each month and while it can add up, your benefit is the security that we are behind the product. As in when you rent an apartment *better even, since if our cooler leaks we actually pay damages whereas when my shower leaked nobody replaced that pallet of Splenda that got drenched*
SC:This is NOT like an apartment.
Me: *fake laughing* Well, it has a lot less storage space! But that's just an example. Its a rental, like any rental. You can purchase it which will end the rental fee. There is no warranty on the owned cooler if you purchase a refurbished model. New coolers have a one-year warranty.
SC:*sigh* So you don't just give coolers away?
Me:*fake laugh* Wouldn't that be nice? But...no.
Bonus
SC works in a school. SC wants to stop service for the summer. SC wants not to be charged a rental for the summer. I offer to have cooler picked up and redelivered when school is back in session. SC refuses. He wants to keep it but not pay because "we won't be using it".
Hello, Enterprise? You know that Escalade I rented? I'll be keeping it for the next three months but its just going to be sitting in my garage. So don't think of billing me for it."
