  • Teh polarbears are gonna die

As most people remember, a large part of Massachusetts got hit with three tornadoes on June 1st. My area received very little damage, however the transmissions lines that feed the are sustained major damage. It took two and half days to restore power to the undamaged area, and another half day to areas with damage wares to houses, etc.

Anyway, when the store lost power we followed our normal routines, block off the frozen food cases, cover the open cases, etc. We have small generator to power lights, phones, registers, etc, but no refrigeration. Refrigerated trucks and dry ice were brought it to keep food cold. While that was going on a large diesel generator the size of semi was being brought in and electricians worked to make emergency changes to wire it to the stores refrigeration system. About 36 hours later it is in place and running. We have refrigeration up. Yay! Product is removed form said trailers and restocked in the cases.

    SC: Excuse me?
    M: Yes.
SC: Is this food safe to eat? I know you lost power but you seem to have power while no one else does.
M: Yes it is. We kept careful watch over temperatures and food was moved to refrigerated trailer and we also used dry ice to keep it cold.
SC: Oh. Good. But how do you have power while no one else in town does?
M: We are running the lights and registers off the generator we have in store, and we just got a large generator in that is running the refrigeration system.
SC: Really. And how do those work?
    M: What do you mean?
SC: Like how does a generator work?
M: Well a engine dries a alternator using magnet and coil of wire to create electricity.
    SC: A engine?
M: Yes. In our case the one we have uses natural gas and the big one they brought in uses diesel.
SC: ... What roe you dooooing? Don't you know that this is killing the polar bears as we speak!!!???? All that carbon dioxide. Couldn't you just use dry ice instead to keep stuff cold?
M: ..... Well I will let <SM> know how you feel if you want?
    SC: Yes, please do.

The SC walks off and heads to frozen foods and the dairy dept and starts buyig all sorts of refrigerated stuff.

I didn't have the heart to tell her what dry ice really is, and how we uses trucks to get food the the store and how they are kept cold.

Oh, I would. I would LOVE to tell him/her that dry ice is just frozen Carbon Dioxide.

Oh fun. The same thing happened in my store last night thanks to two major power outages (7 hours Wednesday night into Thursday morning, 1 hour Saturday afternoon) in the past week. I knew something had happened again when I went in the back entrance of the shopping center and LIPA was working on something. I think Mr. Transformer tried to kill himself.

So obviously the customers are oblivious and try to tug at the freezer doors that have been clearly roped off, and tear off the tarp covering all the open cases. Have fun with that carton of ice cream soup.

Didn't you know? If they can't see a power station, it produces no greenhouse gases. It's only generators (which they can see) which produce greenhouse gases.

This is why I refer to electric cars as coal-fueled.

I want to tile my garage roof with solar cells, and stick a small wind turbine up there as well.

But short of that sort of thing, you're absolutely right.

Water power and nuclear power is neutral, climatewise, as well.

You and me both, actually, though I might have to forego the turbine depending on where we end up. But I seriously do want to see how feasible it would be to use solar power for at least some of our electricity usage.

I'm absolutely paranoid about buying any frozen goods after anything that has shut power down. You know those little notices on frozen TV dinners, and such that say "do not refreeze"? They aren't just on there to use up ink. I still recall (in vivid detail) having food poisoning when I was 7 years old, all because a local store refroze the pot pies that thawed out when they lost power during a hurricane. Don't know why my mother didn't sue the daylights out of them, probably cause either it couldn't be proven what caused it, or where she bought it, or because she didn't want to lose her job, since she worked in the store (in another department).

                  Madness takes it's toll....
                  Please have exact change ready.

Where I am, it frequently gets windy enough at roof/treetop height that a wind turbine would be useful. And while we're in a temperate zone, we're still sunny enough that solar is worth using.

If we had a creek running through the yard I'd have already made a basic waterwheel generator, just because of the 'hey, fun' aspect.

                    ... wait a minute ...

Right. I'm gonna make a windmill myself. Don't know why I never realised I could do that. Even if it just powers path lights and a light over the house number.
