As most people remember, a large part of Massachusetts got hit with three tornadoes on June 1st. My area received very little damage, however the transmissions lines that feed the are sustained major damage. It took two and half days to restore power to the undamaged area, and another half day to areas with damage wares to houses, etc.
Anyway, when the store lost power we followed our normal routines, block off the frozen food cases, cover the open cases, etc. We have small generator to power lights, phones, registers, etc, but no refrigeration. Refrigerated trucks and dry ice were brought it to keep food cold. While that was going on a large diesel generator the size of semi was being brought in and electricians worked to make emergency changes to wire it to the stores refrigeration system. About 36 hours later it is in place and running. We have refrigeration up. Yay! Product is removed form said trailers and restocked in the cases.
SC: Excuse me?
M: Yes.
SC: Is this food safe to eat? I know you lost power but you seem to have power while no one else does.
M: Yes it is. We kept careful watch over temperatures and food was moved to refrigerated trailer and we also used dry ice to keep it cold.
SC: Oh. Good. But how do you have power while no one else in town does?
M: We are running the lights and registers off the generator we have in store, and we just got a large generator in that is running the refrigeration system.
SC: Really. And how do those work?
M: What do you mean?
SC: Like how does a generator work?
M: Well a engine dries a alternator using magnet and coil of wire to create electricity.
SC: A engine?
M: Yes. In our case the one we have uses natural gas and the big one they brought in uses diesel.
SC: ... What roe you dooooing? Don't you know that this is killing the polar bears as we speak!!!???? All that carbon dioxide. Couldn't you just use dry ice instead to keep stuff cold?
M: ..... Well I will let <SM> know how you feel if you want?
SC: Yes, please do.
The SC walks off and heads to frozen foods and the dairy dept and starts buyig all sorts of refrigerated stuff.
I didn't have the heart to tell her what dry ice really is, and how we uses trucks to get food the the store and how they are kept cold.
