  • "Why is it so expensive?"

Every day... EVERY FRICKING DAMN DAY. At least ONE person asks about passport photos...

    "Why is it so expensive?"

I don't know what answer they want. It's $14.99. That's how much it is. Does it suck? No more than Pepsi or Coke charging $1.79 a bottle for water which is free out of the tap.

    or

"Well last time I was here it was (Enter price here)!!"

Well when were you in last? Oh... Five years ago? Well yes.. In Five Years it's gone up to $14.99. I'm sorry that we weren't stuck in some sort of stasis so you could get cheaper ID photos...

    *sigh*

I want to ask... "Well how much do you think I should charge?" but I have a feeling that would open up a whole other can of worms.

You could always tell them to go to the Post Office...last I checked, they charged several times that just for the photo >_>

I forget what I paid when I got my passport photo years ago...but I think it would be the equivalent of that these days.

I'll admit I blanched at the cost you just quoted. I got my last passport photo something like 12 years ago...

NO, people suck at math. Why else would they constantly complain about the cost of gas to me, be driving a lexus and spending $40 at a time on lottery..... Hello, put that "extra" money in the your gas tank if it is so expensive.

I also love the people who will complain about the price and drive around looking for the best price, spending any savings in gasoline. I mean when I'm bored I do "shop around" but for special trips to a place I already know what I'm getting and what is a good deal.

For passport photos I found most places are pretty much within a dollar or two of each other, and the Aid of Rite is horrible compared to the Green wall when it came time to take the photo.... AoR sold my mom a photo where the white balance was so far off she looked white like a sheet of paper. instead of you know, flesh colored.
I'm sorry reading is not a new concept it has been widely taught in our nation for at least the past 100 years. Please, learn to do it CORRECTLY before you become contagious.

Hrm, I checked the USPS site and I stand corrected -- they charge $15 for the photo itself, it's the rest of the fees that bring it up as high as $140 (PLUS the photo)....which makes what your place charges perfectly reasonable ^_^

Also, you could get the specs and try and sneak it past for just the photo printing? It would be like 10 cents then, and you can submit them with the application just like you do when you get "official" pictures.

Remember DON'T SMILE. Which apparently is a passport requirement.

We charge 8.49 after taxes... but we are in a low-income, high-unemployment market.

The biggest deal with your passport photo is making certain it fits the spec - size of the trimmed print, camera angle, size of your head on the print, angle of your head, expression, color of background, etc. etc. ad nauseum... it is better (even at twice our price!) to get a pro to do it, and get it right the first time.

Complainy people are complainy. 20 bucks for the passport picture, and about 90 for the passport itself? How little is that compared to what you'll be spending on your travel itself? Mrs. Salesmonkey wants to go to Europe, so $110 would be the amount of a hotel night or a nice dinner.

My most recent passport was last year. I now regret just getting the passbook and not the wallet card too, as another handy method of "official gov't ID" The instructions on the application clearly stated what the photo requirements were. Any photo meeting the req's would do.

So what you're paying for in an "official passport photo" is the convenience of having someone else take responsibility that your photo would meet the gov't requirements.

I understand their gripe. There are cheaper places.

BUT... Why not go there? Why not just say.

"Oh that's too rich for me... I'm going to go someplace else..."

Why ask me why it's so expensive??? I don't set the prices... I work at a corporately owned portrait studio.

                            I don't understand people.

Ooooh, I didn't know that. I'll have to check it out. I got some photos taken a few years ago at (pharmacy with big red W) and they weren't expensive but I thought I looked terrible so I never used them. I lost weight and intended to get the photos redone, but alas, I may have waited too long...I've gained some of the weight back.
