  • "You're just hired help"

This story comes courtesy of another cashier. She was checking people out and a rude lady came through her line. She was sucky through the whole thing.
First, the lady refused to take the bags filled with groceries from the cashier, and we have very little counter room (we have the little carousels) and I don't have a clue as to how she expects to get the stuff into her cart, unless of course she's handicapped and then of course we will gladly offer to put it into the cart for them.
This is where it really starts to get ridiculous.
Cashier (handing SC receipt): Here you go, Maam, have a nice day.
SC: I'm not taking the receipt from your hand. You're just hired help.
Cashier: Then how am I going to give it to you?
SC: I don't know, but its not my job to take it from you. You shouldn't be doing that.
Cashier: I'm just giving you your receipt, Maam.
SC: But you're hired help. Its your job.
Cashier: Ok, well I'm just going to leave your receipt on the counter then. You can take it if you want to. If not, then you can leave it behind for all I care.
SC gives Cashier the look , then takes the receipt from the counter and walks away. Good for the cashier, because that kind of shit is just ridiculous. We're being nice and performing a service for you by checking you out and bagging your groceries, and this is the kind of treatment we get? From what she told me, I had a feeling she was getting ready to really let the customer have it. And bitches like that certainly deserve it.
I've had a few people ask to put the receipt in the bag and that's no problem at all. But to treat us like the lowest scum of the earth because you feel so fucking high and mighty, that shit ain't right.

How do people still use that phrase? If it wern't for the "hired help" you'd starve to death without your precious groceries.

That's stupid. Wherever she works she's probably hired help too. Anybody who uses that is more than likely hired help unless they are their own boss. Even then they shouldn't say it. All the way from CEO's to dishwashers all are hired help.

Amen to that! Just reading it made me want to hunt down that SC and her until her eyes popped out of her head. Seriously, who goes around with that kind of attitude? Some people desperately need to be taken down a few notches.

I sincerely hope the Cashier doesn't get in trouble for it, but really, what else was she supposed to do? Use telekinesis to float the receipt into Her Royal Majesty's pristine little hand?!
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

I can sort of understand if she was refusing because she had some condition in which other people's germs would be an issue or even if she was just a huge germaphobe (I had someone once that asked me to put hand sanitzer on before handing her things I forgot what she said her reason was), but not taking it because she's "hired help"? So if the person giving them to you was just some random person that walked in you'd take them from that person? Your co-worker definitely did the right thing.

Simple solution if it happens again: Throw the receipt into the trash can. After all, she refused to take it from you. IF she wants it that badly, she can fish it out herself >_>

I seriously doubt the woman in question has ever worked (in a paid position, let alone a low-paying one) a day in her life.

What I want to know is what the hell did the woman think was supposed to happen with the receipt? It's her job... to what, exactly? Was she supposed to use telekinesis to transport the receipt into the woman's purse or something?

And my response would have been (glaring at the EW customer), "No, I'm afraid I can't. I'm just 'hired help' where I work, too. Just put it on the counter and let Her Majesty soil her own little hands."

Funny, I never seem to get into situations where I can hand an SC their head. I think I must give off some sort of pheremone that says, " Don't be an EW around this one. She'll leave your ego bleeding on the floor." Maybe that's not a bad thing, though.

"Yes, I am. I was hired to help you. I'm certainly not doing it for fun." I agree with EricKei. Some of my customers have probably never worked, or not for a long time.
