*This woman wasn't purposely trying to be sucky, her attitude just annoyed me after I had to spend a lot of time doing clean-up in the kid's area*

This woman had brought her two grandkids into the library, and I overheard her telling the girl that if she took a book off the shelf, to NOT try and put it back - that just made a big mess, and she should leave it out on one of the tables.

Where the suck comes from is that when people leave their stuff on the tables, it's MUCH more of a hassle to clean up.......I know some would feel differently, but I find it less time-consuming to put a shelf back in order than to go around the kid's area picking up books that people left around.

Actually, having worked as a page for several years, I much preferred to reshelve books from scratch than to try to figure out a messed-up shelf. Most of the people I worked with felt the same way. In most libraries, there are signs asking people not to reshelve the books themselves.

I was taught by the librarian when I was young, that we were supposed to leave the books on the table so that the librarian could make sure they went back in the right place.

I've been working in libraries for the past... umm... well, it's a long time. And yes, most places do prefer that you leave books on a table or on a book cart so they can be properly re-shelved.

Well, the thing is that we have baskets in the kid's area which are designated for putting unwanted items in, so there's not really a "need" for people to leave books on tables. And I'd be the first to admit that much of my frustration with this comes from the fact that I'm usually the page who's assigned to do "clean-up" at the end of the day........other staff members do help out with things, but I'm technically the one person in charge of picking up messes.

If I'm not ABSOLUTELY certain of a book's location, I'd rather put it on a book cart or in a basket designated for 'books to be reshelved' than leave it out on a table.

Of course, since I do know the alphabet and can read both Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress numbers, I'm fairly confident about personally reshelving. That said, I know librarians have experienced plenty of people who reshelve totally badly and would prefer me to use the book cart.
