  • Thunderstorms? It's your fault!

Yesterday we had such terrible T-storms coming up the coast that the stop sign out front of our store was bent at a 45 degree angle and there were five blackouts in the space of five hours! Five! Three only lasted a few seconds, but the other two were over a half hour each.

When the lights go out, we have to herd customers to the front of the store if they're gone for more than a minute, and in the first few seconds, I met up with one woman walking the opposite way.

Me: Ma'am, you might want to head toward the front of the store. We're probably going to be closing.
EW: Closing? Oh no no no, *I* have to do my shopping!

Oookay... There's barely any light, it's near pitch black and you want to keep shopping? Have fun with that.

Near the end of the storm I was waiting at the front of the store, keeping watch over the doors when I saw one of my coworkers walking with the same woman again and she was, of course, upset about something.

EW: *Incomprehensible blah blah blah angry angry rage*
CW: Okay Ma'am, I don't think we can do anything about that, but I'll get you a manager.
EW: I demand a manager! That cart ran into the back of my car!

...Wait, what? A manager appears only a few seconds later.

    M: What's the problem?
CW: This woman wanted to talk with you, she said a cart ran into the back of her car in the storm and-
EW: I CAN TALK FOR MYSELF! The storm made one of your carts move and it ran into the back of my car and damaged it and you better come out and see it right NOW!

So she drags him out in the rain, and I'm like, WTF? Dunno what happened after that, but I'm pretty sure that she didn't get anything and probably threatened to sue. After all, she did park her car in a lot when there had been a severe storm warning on TV only an hour or two earlier, warning about high winds and lightning. How could she ever have suspected that wind would make carts move?

Yeah! Next you'll be telling her that you can't keep food cold or run registers without power! How silly!

Or that you can't magically keep her dry when she's walking to her car with no umbrella

Most stores have signs posted that say something to the effect of "not responsible for damage done by carts." Hopefully the manager didn't cave.

One of the stores here has a sign reading "High winds forecast for today. Please return carts to the cart corral."

That sign is up all the time, regardless of the forecast. I doubt it does any good, though, since people are stupid and inconsiderate.
