  • Pumping "cinnamon air" into the store

My store right now has two bins of bags of cinnamon scented pine cones. One is outside by the store exit and the other is inside with the floral department stuff. The smell is pretty strong but it's not like it's unpleasant or anything. It's not a great smell, but it could be much worse. Anyway, one customer noticed the smell but did not believe that it came from these pinecones. Intstead, this is what she thought:

SC: I just got a big whiff of cinnamon when I came in! They must be pumping cinnamon air into the store!
Me: Cinnamon? It's probably just the cinnamon pine cones they have displayed. I know some people don't like the smell of cinnamon.
SC: Yes I saw those pinecones but it can't be from them! It's in the whole store! The store is pumping in cinnamon air!

Yes, she really thought we were pumping cinnamon cented air into the store!!

Well some stores will pump a fragrance in the air attempting to get people to stay in the shop longer and spend more money but it is almost always not a strong or harsh smell like cinnamon.

I actually like that smell, that's one of the things I like about my store in the fall. That and we sell candy apples again.

The 'fake cinnamon' smell is one of the few things that makes me gag. This is of course because of my early days of alcohol consumption wherein I felt it was a smashing good idea to drink a great quantity of After Shock (Cinnamon liquor) Oh lordy was I in for a ride that night... and yes it tastes just as much like cinnamon gum on the way back up.

Everyone knows you should pump 'fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie' scented air into every building.

I have always suspected cinnamon bun shops in malls of pumping cinnamon air out of the shop. That smell can't just be coming from what they bake, you can smell it three stores away and it leads you riiiiiiight in.

              I agree!

There's a casino in Jersey that I like that pumps a fresh water smell. It's called the Water Club ironically, but it's a neat concept.

I read somewhere that those cinnamon bun stores actually DO pump the scent out into the mall. It's part of their marketing strategy.

That won't work for me. I like cinnamon but not that much. Now coffee, on the other hand...

If that were the case I'd be drooling the whole time I was in the store

You should have told the person, "Heh, you think so? Go into the custom bathrooms and tell us if you still smell cinnamon air in there..."

Oh god, they've started with the pinecones already? Crap. I'm super allergic to cinnamon and I was hoping to get some last minute crafty shopping done before they put those things out.
Last year I had a huge allergic reaction in the middle of the store because of the stupid pinecones. :/ Right after my husband had grabbed me a job application to work there.

The Wal-Fart where I used to live always smelled like maple syrup. It did have a McDonalds, but that didn't account for the whole store smelling that way all the time.

And of course in the mall there's the A&F that always reeks of terrible cologne. I have to hold my breath walking by that store, and I will never ever set foot in it.

Those pinecones make me ill. When they come on the truck, the entire truck stinks of it, and the boxes all around 'em are contaminated with the stench.

Six of the pinecones...oh nifty, smells good. A few hundred...makes me wanna hurl.

                        To much information? lol

Well, some grocery stores around here have the bakery vented to the entrance of the store - by the time you get into the store your mouth is watering for the taste of fresh bread and sticky buns. I approve.

My guess? Someone broke a few bottles in ages past and it was never completely cleaned up, as some will invariably seep under the racks and be left there for all eternity.
