  • Sucky auction dude

I am a seller on the largest online auction site. Before Thanksgiving this past year I was selling a very nice 1890 LeCoultre 18k gold pocket watch that I got for close to $300.00 at a local auction. If anyone knows these watches, they are built like a tank and are usually very easy to repair, which is why I got it for such a good price. Anyway, I repaired it myself and even polished the crystal that had a few scratches on it and listed it for seven days at a start price of $800. This is where my SC comes in.

    Email #1 (edited for brevity)

    Bigjimaz,
I am an expert on Swiss watches and movements and I can tell you that the watch you have listed for $800 will never sell at that price. The movement, if it is original, is older than the date on the watch itself and not as accurate as later movements. I will offer you $500 for it, out the door (including shipping) so you don’t suffer from having to relist it at a lower price when it doesn’t sell.

    Thanks,

    Sucky auction dude

I know immediately that he is trying to get the watch for a cheap price but I don’t pay too much attention to these kinds of things. I get them all the time, even on my lower priced (99¢) listings.

    My reply: (also edited)

    Sucky auction dude,
Thanks for the offer but I will have to decline. I know that the movement in the watch predates the dated watch case. That is the reason I believe it will sell for even more than I have it listed for.

    Thanks

    Bigjimaz.

    Email #2

    Bigjimaz,
There’s no way in hell that watch is even going to draw bids for half the amount you have it listed for. Your fucked if you think that an old movement will bring a higher price. Where the hell did you get your information from, your dumbass brother-in-law? You had better rethink my offer before you get more fees tacked on to resell it.

    Think hard,

    Sucky auction dude

This pisses me off. Even though he’s an ex-brother-in-law, I have been friends with him for 30 years and he knows his stuff. The only job he has had since I have known him is watchmaker and repairer.

    My reply:

    Sucky auction dude,
I’m sorry. The auction will run it’s course as I believe it will sell for at least what I have it listed for. You can bid on it if you like, or you can move on to something in the price range you want to pay. It’s your choice. I thank you for your concern. I consider this matter closed

    Thank you,

    bigjimaz

Don’t ya just love having to be nice to these kind of people?

Since you think you know more than me, I hope you choke on the f**king thing. You had your chance asshole. I’ll be watching the auction see how bad of a beating you take. edit out a few more choice expletives directed at my lack of value and character.

    The watch sold for $1329.00

The thing is, Sucky auction dude made a bid of $1000.00 on it about an hour before the listing ended. I never did hear from him again.

I love it. You didn't give it to him on the cheap with the first attempt, so he proceeds to throw a hissy fit. I guess he figured if he insulted you, that you would realize the error of your ways and concede. What a fucktard.

By the way, I hope you reported him to whatever site it is that you work with/on... Won't that be the icing on the cake.

Oh, I was so hoping your story would end like that. That is priceless.

I have written to sellers on that site only to ask a question about an auction item or to give them some information to correct their listing (most thank me and admit they know nothing of the particular item they are selling). I never would even consider asking the seller to take less than the starting bid before the auction ends. What an insult!

Definitely. I think when people try that, they are hoping to get people to fall for their 'expert advice' and convince them that selling to them is the only way to get anything out of it. Sadly, there are some who truly don't know a lot about what they are selling, and will fall for this scam. I think it's part of most auction site guidelines that if a transaction that is listed is conducted outside of the site's procedures, your protections against fraud are history. So people who do fall for it, end up screwed.

Unfortunately for this guy, bigjimaz knew exactly what he was selling.

Oh yeah, you know it. After I got the first email, I'd put him in my spam filter, and let the auction service know he was trying to scam me.
No more interaction with him. Hell, no response to him in general. So no need to go fubar...

Good on ya mate. I love it when some ebay-tard tries to make experts think that something isn't going to sell for what they KNOW it's going to sell for.

My sense too. I guess he thought the seller could be talked into 1) taking the sale outside the auction, and 2) accepting less than market price.

What surprises me is how quickly he turned into an asshole.

It always amazes me that people who want others to do them a favor think the best way to ask for a favor is be hostile and insulting.

Not nearly as abusive, but I just had a buyer for a sewing pattern giving me a hard time because her shipping address on eBay was in the U.S., but she wanted the item shipped to Canada, and I hesitated to ship to a different address.

Then I told her it would cost a lot more to ship to Canada because she wanted it shipped airmail, and the USPS was requiring the big, five-part Customs form for all airmailed items, and she was upset about that, and trying to tell me it wouldn't, even after I told her I had already gone through the whole process with another item going out of the U.S.

Ack. I had quit selling for two years because of a psycho buyer who freaked on me when I accidently sent her the wrong item. Not only did she freak, she threw out the incorrect item I shipped to her, instead of shipping it back (and I offered to send a pre-paid, padded envelope for the return), so the other buyer was out her item, too. Thankfully, the other (sane) buyer didn't complain about me, but I had to threaten the psycho buyer with a complaint to eBay to get her to back off. I had even agreed to refund her money and make sure the correct item was shipped to her.

                  I hate people.

Yeah, not only did he try to scam you in his first letter, he used profanity and insults in his later letters. Definitely against the rules. He deserves to be reported and kicked off the auction site.

Joyful fun. I'm never using Ebay again. I used to be pretty active, but then my hard drive fried about 6 months ago, and I couldn't access Ebay from work.

Six months my computer was inactive. I fixed it last weekend. In my e-mail account (which I couldn't access away from my home PC - don't ask) there were several e-mails from an irate seller, as well as an e-mail from Ebay stating that my account has been suspended for suspicious activity. It appears that someone hacked my account and started making bogus bids and generally causing a ruckus.

Sad thing is, Ebay doesn't believe it. Nor does the seller who sent all the irate e-mails. So I'm just staying away from Ebay from now on.

Funny that the ass contradicted himself after bidding higher on it. You should reply back and gloat on it a little I think, knowing him he'll just say F$%^ you.

I'm dealing with a pretty sucky, shady (or just plain stupid) buyer right now. He has private feedback and no address or contact information listed. His typed English is so broken as to be almost incoherant. Auction ended two weeks ago. I sent an invoice including address to buyer same day auction ended. Four days after the end of the auction, I message him since I was wondering how he was paying(paypal users tend to pay the same or next day, but mail takes 4-5 days, which is fine). In really broken English, he replies that he hasn't sent it yet because he's "busy", and asked for my address. So I sent him my address again and waited over a week for payment. None arrived. So I messaged him a few days ago to see if he sent it yet. I advised him to have it here in a few days, and I said that maybe he should make his feedback public. So he acts "surprised" that I haven't got it yet. So the deadline passed yesterday. He messages me again. Has to be read to be believed:

"Hi I was think she did send out but was not did not send it but i will do go money order for you send out was you send me right address ? let me know thanks " Followed a few hours later by "wait for you back my email? thanks " (Like I'm the one who's taking too long!)

So basically he's asking my address again as if he can't look it up in his invoice or the message I already sent him. And it seems he's blaming his wife for the delay in shipping. What's so hard about getting up off your own ass!!!

So today I replied like this:

"For the 3rd time, here is my address. There is little excuse for taking this long. To some people, eBay is their lifeline. You don't send payment, they don't get paid. I'm not one of those people, but that doesn't matter. "

I'll be adding updates on it later, I'm trying to decide if I should just give him automatic neutral feedback assuming he doesn't screw me around anymore. If he does I'll red flag him.

I have dealt with tons of customers like that at my last job. I took care of the internet auctions, and there are so many deadbeats out there it isn't funny. Good thing they have a Blocked Bidder list, so those morons can't fleece us a second time (at least, under that name...).

Yeah, they drag their feet on the payments, and every time you send them an e-mail asking for payment, they request your address (what, do you delete your e-mail the second you see it?! Dumbass!), sometimes they even blame YOU for being "impatient" (Jerkoff, requesting payment on a three-month-old auction is not being "impatient"!). Or they ignore each and every e-mail, then pitch a conniption when you leave a negative feedback (and I only did that with very delinquent non-payers, like three months or more).

I'm just too nice for my own good, but I've learned my lesson. If I do online auctions again, I will state very clearly that I expect payment within the month, and if I do not receive it, the bidder gets reported to the site and left a negative.

Ah Ebay I am beyond done with them. They suspended me for selling a boat for a friend and writing "for a friend" in the listing because it was "suspicious". Didn't try and contact me ahead of time. Well no, they did. Got my wife who told them I was in fact selling a boat, and still suspended me.

Then my account got hacked at least they were nice about that.

Then two scammers "bought" my truck (wire scam) and they gave me a hard time about getting my money back for it.
