Email SC: I can't activate.
Response: Please let me know your serial number and, if you haven't yet registered, your name and address.
Email SC: My serial number is XXXXXXXXXX.
[I made a mental note that the serial number was not eligible for the version he was trying to activate, but was eligible for update pricing for that version. Update pricing would save him hundreds of dollars. If he didn't want to pay for the update he could have continued using his current version for free. If he had actually read the error message, he would have figured all that out.

Response: Thank you. We provide free support to all licensed and registered customers, please supply your name and address so I can register serial number XXXXXXXXX to you.
Email SC: This is too complicated. I'm going to go with [name of competing freeware product which is an unsupported piece of crap].
Response: I understand. If you need help in the future registering license XXXXXXXX, please don't hesitate to get in touch again.
So either he's one kind of dummy in that he paid good money for a license and refuses to make even the tiniest amount of effort whatsoever to make it work. If that's the case, why should we be upset that he's going to the competition? He's already paid us!
OR
He's another kind of dummy. He is trying to scam an update and my insistence on his contact information scared him off. And his "revenge" is to go to the competition.
Either way, he's a dummy and we got paid.
