  • dont talk to me on my lunch break please

-For the life of me i cannot understand whyyyyyyyyyy!!! customers come to my line and try to unload when 1.my light is off and 2. i have my closed lane sign up i dont know if they think i'll let it slide and not say anything but its really annoying. tonight i was trying to leave (we get written up if we leave 15 minutes past our clock out time) and people kept coming i had to keep telling them im closed mam, sir im closed.(one guy came up to my line and said i know you're closing but that other line was just too long and starts unloading )

-another thing i cant understand is people leaving their credit cards at home/ and or buying $800 worth of items just to find out they only have $100. i dont know about everybody else but i will leave keys a cell phone etc etc but NEVER my debit card being that is has every drop of my hard earned money on it. another thing..how hard is it to call and check your balance before you come make a big purchase..? i get tired of holding up my line to go get a manager to cancel a transaction because someone brought two carts full of food with a $40 food stamp balance.

    - no i will not waste my hour lunch chit chatting with you..go find someone with a nametag on stocking or something
sc-helllooooo excuuusee meee !!do you work here ??!!
    me-no....
sc-yes you do you have on the uniform
me-nope i work at the one in (next town over) i just got finished shopping here

    grr..

So how long did he stand there and stare at you until he realized you weren't going to ring him up? Or did you finally break down and do it?

At my store they just initiated a new annoying policy. Before we get on register we have to count our register at the register in full view of the lines of people waiting to check out. Then at the end of the shift we have to count down our register right there as well. Not fun get plenty of dirty looks and comments when counting down and the line gets long.

I was a check out chick part time for 7 years, almost 8.. it was my first after school job that lasted a little longer than it should..

anyway... here I am aged 33, and I still have the occasional nightmare where I am working the checkout, it's finishing time, and some small child turns my light on without me noticing.. so when I get customers lining up and I say I'm closed, they point out my light is on and I have to put them through.. I turn off the light, run them through and the kid flicks my light on again.. lather rinse repeat until I wake up in a panic..

and this was one of my funner jobs so I don't know why I'm apparently so traumatized by it.. I'd even do it again!

Sorry but your post reminded me of my nightmare, don't know why lol!

What is the reasoning for counting down in front of customers, having your till out in the open in front of dozens of strangers?
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

I had one SC who demanded I ring them out. Problem was, my register was broken. The closed sign was up, and the SC insisted i was lazy.

They eventually stomped off, leaving their items behind.

That's so great. I have a recurring nightmare that I close the lobby of the fast food restaurant that I work at and then people will find a way to sneak in through the windows or I will be closing the door and people will be sticking in arms and legs trying to get in the door and all the crew is pushing trying to get the hoards of people out. I wake up in a panic about how I can't get people out of my lobby.

If there's one group of people that reasoning applies less to than customers, it's the corporate armchair quarter backers that write the policies and procedures.

Oh great Og yes! I've posted a few times about My store closing at 4pm on a Sunday. When It's time I lock the inbound door, and stand at the outbound one to make sure all traffic is in the right direction. On the nights around really busy weekends I have a recurring nightmare of people ignoring me and just walking in.

                  First 1
                  Then 2... 4... Lots!

Worst of it is, it's not a "wake up in shock" nightmare. It's more of a "wake up next morning... hang on did that happen or not"kind:

luckily one of my managers was standing near by and told him i was closed and couldnt take anybody else. he replied 'she threw her sign up right when i walked up that was pretty rude. i dont know if hes stupid or stupid but my sign had been up for about 12 minutes before he came

Ohohoho as a customer, this drives me wild. Are they (manglement obviously) taunting those of us who briefly think we have a chance at escaping the long lines of horror?! For the love of all things holy, do you HAVE to make staff do this IN FRONT of us?!

That was one of my biggest peeves as well. I'd be trying to close, and I'd have my "closed" sign up, and people would ignore it. I'm sure there were a few that honestly didn't see it, but I think they were the minority. I think most of the people saw the sign, but figured that if they got in line anyway I'd have to ring them out. And then when I'd politely tell them I was closing, they'd look at me like I was the rude one.

One day, right at the end of my shift, it got really bad. I lost count of how many people I had to tell I was closing. I finally got tired of telling them, so after I took care of the last person who had stepped into my line before I turned the sign, I shut down the register and walked away like no one was there. I'm not normally that bold, but I was in a mood that day. Surprisingly, I didn't hear a word about it when I came in next time.

I think this is true of every profession. I used to teach preschool, and I would have recurring nightmares about naptime ... children escaping from cots every time I turned around. Once I actually called in because the dream was so vivid and I was actually beating children in the dream. I could not face them that day.

We get bugged on our lunch breaks too. Often times its not bad but we have this one guy that comes in that does NOT care if you are on your lunch break. He CAN and WILL stop you. So what I usually do is I put on my earbuds when I see him and act like he's not there. He's a grown man....he is able to shop by himself for himself. We have seen it many many times that he has been able to shop on his own.

Where I work, the register light switch is high up. Small children can't reach them.
