got this gem this evening....not really sucky...just...clueless?

Me: *opening speil and verifcation* and how may I help you today ms. customer?

SC: Yeah I got an email a couple of days ago from you guys saying that if I didn't click this link in the email and verify my account information with you that my account would be shut down, and I had to do it by the 31st.

me:..................ma'am I'm looking at your account and the last email we sent you was a copy of your statement.

SC: Well I clicked on the link in the email and it said page not found, and I wanted to make sure that my account wasn't gonna be frozen.

ME: Ma'am I can assure you that your account is in good standing, and that we did not send you any emails beyond your statement. But would you mind forwarding that email to this address so that we can track down the person that sent it. *gives email address to send spoof emails to* and if you ever receive an email from us that asks you to verify your account information to call us right away, we never ask to verify account info except over the phone. *closing speil*

    ------------

    right after that call...

Me: you know...its calls like that, that make me loose my faith in humanity....

supervisor: your faith in humanity keeps dropping its gonna be in the negative.

ME: to late...any lower I might start shopping around for bell towers.

I get those once in a while. Had a couple recently purporting to be from hotmail. Yeah, not gonna click that button. Damn scammers.

I get a number of those related to online gaming accounts, only one of which I actually have an account for, so no, I don't think there is a problem with my non-existent Runescape account...

I get WoW, Runescape, Runes of Magic, EVE Online, LOTRO, some gpotato game I have never heard of, and um ... Chase banks, Citibank, a couple of local to CT banks [I have a Navy Fed Cred account and my main Credit Union account as my only banking accounts] and the usual run of penis enlarging and hair replacement spams, as well as the usual nigerian crap. And some mystery russian spam, not speaking russian I don't actually know what kind of spam it is. I do not actually have any credit cards, no mortgage, no car loans and no real debts of any sort. [If I do not have the money to get it, I don't need it... and if it is something I really do need, I make sure to sort out my finances to get it.]
EVE Online: 99% of the time you sit around waiting for something to happen, but that 1% of action is what hooks people like crack, you don't get interviewed by the BBC for a WoW raid.

I have accounts on a few of the WoW support sites, like Wowhead & Curse Gaming, but I use a totally different address for them as for my actual gaming account; this has helped highlight just how much junk is sent to trawled email addresses...

I love how many emails I get asking me to confirm details with banks I'm not at all affiliated with, or even resident in the right country to use, but my favourite is one that did actually claim to be from my bank. Sadly, whoever set up this scam 1) decided to immitate an email style that had just been outdated in a brilliant fanfare of internal publicity, and 2) had an HTML attachment that you needed to fill in & submit to his site, rather than to the bank...

I had an interesting email a couple weeks ago that LOOKED like a phish but was actually a weird mistake.

Email from Best Buy saying that the credit card I used for my phone protection plan had been declined, and I had to call them and fix it. Now I've never bought a phone or a protection plan from Best Buy, so immediately I think "crappy phishing scam." But, the email is no-reply, and the phone number is a legitimate Best Buy number.

So I called them. Turns out there's a woman with the same name as me in Texas. SHE bought a phone and a protection plan at Best Buy. Somehow, despite our email addresses being not even remotely similar, they pulled up mine when they went to email her.

She's lucky all she got was a file not found error, and not a form asking to verify all her bank info.

He needs to have his computer checked anyways. It sounds like he might be the victom of keyloggers. He should have both virus protection and spyware protection (to clear up any keylogging problems that may occur) I can't empthasize this strongly enough. He might have seen "file not found" but they could have already gotten his password.

Also, it's not that he himself made any deliberate mistakes. Sounds to me like he's naive on stuff like this. Keyloggers love to prey on naive people like him.

I got one today supposedly from some bank in Libya. Apparently, they have several million dollars belonging to one of the son's of Gaddafi and they want to give it to me.

I think. The English was so badly mangled.

It's twice as funny for me, as being in Australia, we do not have the FBI, CIA etc.

So every now and then I'll get emails reportedly being from the CIA, FBI, some bank in the US and so forth. It just makes it even easier for me to know that those are scams

Every now and then, I'll get an email that slips past my spam filters, telling me to go verify my Facebook account.

Yeah, I don't have a Facebook account. I have a MySpace, which I haven't logged into in probably two years, and hell, if they want to haxx0r that, they can go ahead and do so, I stopped caring.

I like getting the ones to emails that I have never connected to my name or my banks because they're for my online rp and I don't want my boss/cousins/classmates finding out where I play.
