  • EW buying shoes

So today (Black Friday) I got a mid shift in the shoe department. It went pretty fast, the opening crew left and the night crew showed up around two and three. At about four this woman shows up and sends new girl closer running back and forth for several boots.
I'm finishing checking out someone when new girl catches my eye. She needs help finding a shoe. Ok. I take over helping this lady while new girl moves on to other people. I get the lady her boot.
    Me
    Bitch Whore: BW
    Spineless Manager: SM

BW: How much were these earlier?
Me: ah, 19.99. But the door busters ended at one. They are now 39.99.
    BW: that's too expensive.
Me: that's the price, the door busters ended at one.
BW(looking around like the tweaker she is): I want to talk to a manager.
    Me: wha?
    (I page a manager)
I wait and go get some shoes for someone. A few minutes pass and no mgr.
BW starts talking: I always get what I want. My man did not get paid till today. Yeah, I always get what I want.
(man I hate whores like this. I just want to slap them.)
So she keeps yammering on about how she always get what she wants, etc.
I page again: ANY Manager to shoes!!
She keeps going on and on, how unfair it is, etc.
SM finally shows up: you called me?
Me: the "lady" wanted to talked to a manager.
BW: My man didnt get his paycheck till after one and I want the early price.
SM: Violia, how much was it?
    me: 19.99, but it's 39.99 now.
SM(as he walks behind me): just give it to her.
    Me:
As SM walks off I glower at him and he looks at me sheepishly from behind her.
BW continues to harangue me about how she always gets what she wants, like the smug whore she is.
Her skeezy boyfriend even waved his paystub at me.
I come that close to just walking off, or yelling at them.
SM comes back later said she gave him and other manager trouble when she came in. I have no idea what about. I really wish we had managers that were hardasses.

Your manager is a jerk. The minute a customer starts bragging "I get whatever I want" and bitching you out for not kneeling down before her greatness, she should be shown the door. I'd be much more willing to extend the discount to someone who came in and very nicely asked if there was any way she could get the doorbuster price now since her gentleman friend only just now got his paycheck. Obviously BW has never even tried that tactic.

In order to stop it, go over the manager's head and report it. It's not fair to you for enforcing the current sale, and it's no fair to other customer's nearby who might try the same thing. Who knows? Maybe you'll have the position of manager and finally get to tell that "lady" "NO!!!" next time.

I get the lady the boot.
Edited to reflect what I wish actually happened.

It's one thing if it's 1:05, and you were waiting for the salesperson to find the boot, it's another to demand the discount HOURS later. At Fred Meyer the registers were pre-programed to stop giving the "special sale prices" half an hour after the sale was over. It gave the people in line time to still get the price, but after that we needed a FEM to approve it.

When I used to work at Kohls and they had the Early Bird specials until 1, they always would ring up at the register until 2. None of the managers would let people try to get those sale prices after that at all.

When I was working retail the line was hard and fast NO for the door busters on black Friday. I mean, the entire POINT of them was to get people in at silly o'clock in the morning and to get them to buy other crap. the door busters lost the company money generally.

              Le Sigh.

I'd have let her find the door herself after telling her, "Not here you don't!" Sorry you had to put up with this EW and then on top of that a spineless manager. Would it do any good to report it over his head, as others have suggested?

That lady definitely would've gotten the boot if I was the manager. It's not fair that the SC's like her get what they want from spineless managers and it's unfair to the associates trying to enforce policy and the other customers abiding by it.

How to such spineless people get to be managers? And why on earth do companies think it's ok.

Sure, standing firm might lose you that customer. But giving in like that can lose them a lot more customers and/or a lot more money.

I guarantee you if I got up and got in early for some big sale price, then found out that it was given to someone coming in hours past the deadline, I'd stop shopping there, and spread the word to others who would do the same.

And if I overheard a manager giving another customer the earlier price, I'd demand to get the earlier price on anything in the store as well, and after I got it, I'd spend half an hour walking around telling everyone in the store so they could get it too (ok, maybe that's being an SC, but in that case, I think it would be justified - and it would only be that manager I would go after to get it, not the other employees, and I would make sure I told everyone they had to go thru that manager to get it ).

I think there's got to be a special place in he** for those managers with no spine who give in, yet still expect the employees to hold firm and keep to policy at all times. Why can't managers realize a person cannot do their job properly if management won't ever back them up?

That's a damn good question...for which I have no answer.

The manager's at the 'hellhole' are the same way but if we were to do that, they give us hell. Now, I always call a manager just to get these EW's out of my face. The manager always gets upset for being bothered, too.

You can't please 'em (managers) no matter what you do, so I've stopped trying.
