  • I'm going to Wal-Mart now because I can't READ!! (sez my latest SC)

I was working the overnight shift at Kroger (I can only do weekends because the weekday overnight checker has four more years senority; union rules) and I had a customer who thought the half gallons of milk were on sale for $1.00 (which they were last week; now they were standard $1.99 again). Now, I offered to check the prices for him (once I got someone to watch my checklane; we have to on overnight), but the other co-worker didn't show up so we finalized his order (because I was pretty sure the $1.99 was correct and I didn't want to unnecesairly keep him waiting). Well, the floor guy was there and while he watched my checklane, we (me and the customer) went to the back of the store where we have the milk. Sure enough, they were very clearly priced $1.99 (because the previously mentioned sale was last week's). The customer then asked if he could get a refund on the milk, and I said we'd be glad to once Customer Care reopens after 7AM (the standard checklanes don't have the tools to process refunds/exchanges), and needless to say, the customer didn't want to. Well on the way back, the customer threatened to start shopping at Wal-Mart and not come back to Kroger. Well, I guess don't let the door hitcha where the good Lord splitcha! I mean, it's not our fault the man can't read a huge yellow price tag. :P

We used to get that threat all the time, back when I was with Kroger and the Wal-Mart in town opened up their grocery section. People kept asking how we were going to stay in business charging more than them, not having as much selection, blah blah blah. And yet, these whiners kept coming back and doing the majority of their shopping with us and we didn't lose any business over it.

Probably because most customers prefer stores that are dedicated to whatever it is they want. For example, if I want video games, I go to EB Games. If I want DVDs, I go to deepdiscoutdvd.com. If I want baseball cards, I go to bbcexchange.com (or Ebay in a pinch). And if I want groceries, I go to a real grocery store, not just some superstore that just has their groceries as a sideshow. In fact, I consider the day Wal-Mart began their fake grocery stores to be when they jumped the shark (because now their selection of what used to be their bread and butter is not nearly as good as it used to be).

I wonder why everybody thinks its such a HUGE threat when they yell: "Fine, I'll take my business somewhere else!" More than likely if they're yelling that we're hoping they do!

I had a man the other night get mad because of our check cashing policy and he yelled: "Fine, I'll just go to (insert competitors name here)!" My thought was:

I went on a break and came back ten mins later to see him in my co-workers window getting done what he threatened to do somewhere else!
