  • The employee is always right, ma'am!

So tonight this lady was looking for Motrin PM. We didn't have the name brand on the shelf, but I told her that the store brand Ibuprofen PM is the same exact thing. Her response? "No it's NOT the same, you guys can say that all you want but it's not the same! I work in the health care industry! Ibuprofen and Advil aren't even the same thing. So now (store) is trying to screw us over by only selling their brand? Great!!" I went in the back and found some **MOTRIN** (Ibuprofen in a pretty orange box) and she was happy. Talked to the pharmacist who told me that I was right and the customer was wrong. My mother who is a nurse also found the story pretty amusing.

No no, your pharmacist made a mistake there. See, they forgot that she was a customer, so the laws of common sense and reality bend to her every whim. If she says that they're not the same thng then, by god, they will never be the same thing again. EVER.

Y'know, until some other customer (maybe even this one again) tells you that you're wrong and they are the same and reality corrects itself around them again.

      SC don't have a clue

Our pharmacist is really good. If the doctor prescribes something that is over the counter, he will always recommend buying it like that if it saves money.

Not to split hairs, but in spite of claims, that's not always the case. There are sometimes differences in "inactive" ingredients, which can still change how medications behave. I know that with prescription medications, my wife had to be moved from a generic to a name brand because the pharmacy changed generic providers, and the new provider's fillers caused some undesirable side effects.
So while there was a good likelihood of the customer being sucky (or at least ill-informed), there's a slight chance she actually had a legitimate reason for wanting the name brand.

Well, the claims about Advil and Ibuprofen not even being close is bs. Same active ingredients. I can see if she pointed that Advil has a nice candy-coating to it and Ibuprofen tastes like chalk. As a teenager, I'd refuse to take non-Advil since I liked the coating so she may want the coating for some similar reason. I have no idea if Motrin is coated. I just know every store brand I've had lacks the coat.

I think they do actually make coated generic Ipuprofen (advil), Acetomenaphin (tylenol), and Naproxen (Aleve) these days ^_^

I use Ibuprofen quite a bit for aches and pains (fever and sore throat, too) but I'll usually get the generic store brand in the largest count bottle.

There's two things that gets gone quick in my house - Ibuprofen and heartburn pills.

I guess reading the Motrin PM bottle and seeing that the only active ingredient is *gasp* ibuprofen is far too difficult a concept.

If she really works in the medical field (which I doubt) then I don't want her ANYWHERE near me if I'm ever direly sick or injured. She'd spend more time arguing about the attributes of whatever medicine they wanted to give me than actually trying to help me! Seriously! I'd have been tempted to pick up a pack of Ibuprofin, and a pack of Advil or Motrin, and read the active ingredients of both to her, then smile my best customer service faux smile as she stammered for a rebuttal. Also: Motrin does have a lovely bright orange coating. I know because I had to take some at work for a headache once when we were out of Advil. Oh look...they both worked the same. Imagine that!

That's partially why I think she may have wanted the coating and not risk the generic brand not having the coating on it. The last pack I picked up of generics was back in 2010 and it was without the coating. Plus when people are in pain (cramps! headache!), sometimes they are bitchy.

Isn't the secondary ingredient in certain of these meds just aspirin and/or caffeine?

ex - Excedrin Migraine is just that (at least, among the major components) -- equal amounts of acetomenaphin and aspirin, plus some caffeine...Does that mean I should just pop a tylenol and an aspirin and wash them down with a freezing-cold Coke when I have a bad headache? ^_^

It is for some of my customers. I've lost count of how many times I would be asked about it when the Motrin was out of stock due to recall.

Had the store brand version on hand, but we had a few months there where both Motrin and Tylenol products were pulled from the shelf due to production issues.

Nevermind we had signs on the shelf explaining that they were out due to manufacturer's recall - they didn't want to read that either.

Ignoring the fact I usually try to get liquid gel versions of any OTC pain meds, I just yesterday bought a 400 count of <my store brand> naproxen. They don't have a coating but I bought them for 3 reasons: 1) naproxen is one of 2 pain meds to have any effect, 2) it's cheaper then name brand, 3) I get a bigger discount on <my store brand> products.
                          I only buy store brand.
And yes I've had many a times I tried to tell customers that <name brand> is exactly the same thing as <store brand> except the name brand product has <name brand> on it. Sometimes I can get it through to them. Sometimes... I can't. (but it's not Tylenol/aleve/Motrin!!!)
