What's worse, I watch the court shows all the time. I used to do it on the telly, but now I have to rely on you tube. But anyway, half the time, there is always a parent there trying to justify the bad behavior of a child or teenager. The worst was a woman who defended her daughter, who was involved in a clear set-up against her former best friend.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

I predict in the not so distant future, little Johnny is going to be stuck under a vending machine.

That, or he's going to tease a dog unmercifully through a fence and discover too late that either the gate is unlocked or the dog can jump the fence. A dog big enough to eat him.

Something like this happened to the brat who lived down the street from me when I was growing up. We were at an outdoor birthday party for another neighborhood kid, when Brat Boy starts teasing another neighbor's dog through the fence. The dogs owner (a lovely lady, I used to baby sit her kids) warned Brat Boy several times that her dog did bite (which is why she had the Warning Beware of Dog signs on her fence).

Brat Boy kept it up and sure enough, got bit. Brat Boy's Mom tried to get the county to seize the dog and put it down . . . they told her to get hosed: Brat Boy had been warned not once, but several times and signs were clearly posted.

The OP did exactly the right thing, in the right tone of voice. Mom was 100% wrong.
They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.

In about ten years time, is mommy dearest going to be in a courtroom yelling, "That car was there for my kid to steal! How dare you crush his spirits?!"

I'll second the sentiment that "parents" like these are their kid's own worst enemies. Seriously, in a few year's time the kid's going to graduate to things more serious than pounding on an arcade game. And mommy will either be defending him to the death, playing Cleopatra Queen of Denial, or crying to all between heaven and earth, about how out of control her child is, and why won't he just do as he's told?

What a shame that so many parents don't even care enough to teach their kid right from wrong.

Or it's "My child wouldn't do that!" to a Greensboro police officer after they've been joyriding with Daddy's car, hit another vehicle twice and then crashed into a beauty shop.

I could see her child as THIS kid in a few years:

and THAT guy's mother still argues that what he did was illegal, but not 'bad enough' that he should have a criminal record, and managed to get the little shit out in time for xmas!

I'm the same whenever kids try to go down our escalator where I work (we only have one that goes up) and most of the time, I will apologise to the parents for being sharp with their kids. Most of the time, they understand that I'm doing this to keep them safe.

Sometimes, we need to be sharp to get the child's attention, then explain why we don't do it. That's perfectly normal and the safety of customers is part of any retailer's job description.
