  • Liars and annoyers and bad breath - oh my!

We're pretty lucky in that we don't get that many SC's but the last week we've had a few.

It's cheaper than you told me last week, right?

Had a girl come in who needed to get her keyboard on her netbook fixed. Why? Because she popped up a bunch of the keys to clean the keyboard out.

Of course, I had to explain to her that it wasn't possible to fix the keys (it is sometimes possible to pop them back on but she broke a bunch of the nubs off that holds them in place) and we had to replace the keyboard. She said she didn't want to do it if it ran over $60. Fine - I can see that. She's also one of those people who wants to get it ASAP and then doesn't show up when you call to tell her it's done. I did the job Friday and she didn't call me until today with the password for the netbook so we could properly test the keyboard.

Here's another gem: she had a bunch of stickers on the keyboard for what I believe were Hebrew letters - she wanted me to peel the letters off and put them on the new keyboard for her. Yeah, not happening, honey. Not unless you're paying me more and chances are they wouldn't re-stick anyway... then I'd get blamed for not transferring the stickers properly.

Anyway, when I call back to let her know the keyboard tested properly, here's the tail end of the conversation:

Me: So it's good to go... and you think you'll be in tomorrow?
SC: I think so, yah. So it's $30 right?
Me: Nice try (sort of mumbled that, but I kinda didn't care if she didn't hear me) no, like I told you last week it's $55.
SC: Oh yah it was $30 for the keyboard and $25 for labor
Me: Yeah, pretty much. See you tomorrow.

I'd bet cash money if I just said yes when she said it was $30, when she came in to pick up and it wasn't still $30 she'd complain because "that's what the guy on the phone said". Good thing I was paying attention.

No. It's not goddammed done yet.

Had a woman who brought a computer in for a new hard drive to be put in. I already told her yesterday we would have the new drive in today. She called at like noon today to see what the status was. I had just started loading Windows into it and, of course, told her I'd call when it was done.

She calls about five hours later to see if it's done yet. Well, no. It's about 75% but her data took longer than expected to migrate from her old hard drive. I tell her I will gladly call her the moment it's done.

I mean, seriously... do these people think I want their computers in here taking up space? I want to get them out of here as quickly as possible.

No, it isn't done and please have a breath mint.

Another guy who can't get it through it his head that WE WILL CALL YOU when your computer is done called. He's come in to see us on and off for a few years. Talks too much. Even when I'm trying to make it obvious I'm TRYING to work. I'm tempted to flat out tell him: "I'm trying to work, I can't talk." I swear I'm too polite. He also has really bad breath. It doesn't seem as bad as it was a couple of years ago, but it's still detectible.

    Seriously?

We're pretty swamped this week, which is a good thing. Had a guy bring in a computer today for data recovery... said it had been sitting for months. So 3 hours after he drops it off, he calls to see if we've grabbed his data yet.

My tech had answered the phone and sort of gasped in disbelief "seriously? He just dropped it off a couple of hours ago!" - it was then I realized the tech hadn't put the phone on hold like we usually do.

Regardless, I told the tech we had like 6 people ahead of time (truth) so I hopefully wouldn't come off like a total dick on the phone... but man, after all these people calling all day and interrupting us while we're working, I had just about had it.

Swell. Just had a pack of kids walk by and one of them decided to be clever and knock on the window for attention while I was typing this. I shooed him away I heard him say "oh hell no" (kid is whiter than I am, btw) but man... I've about had it for the day. It's a good thing I don't drink or I'd be headed straight to the bar right now.

Couldn't you just explain to the botherers that you charge by the hour, and that for every minute they bother you while you're working, that adds more to the labor as it's taking longer?

Knowing the customers, I'm sure they would try to find a problem with that as well. Extra labor costs, indeed! If only, if only...

We call that the "idiot tax".

          Data Recovery

That guy is dreaming. I don't know how bad his drive is, but in the past I have had to leave a recovery program running all weekend to save some drive's data.

And in the best case if he had backup tapes, it still can take hours restore from tape.
