  • My last customer of a day and a few others.

I will start w/ my last customer. I was in money center. My customers were pretty ok today except for a few(nothing worthy of a story)

In walks a lady and she has a check dated for 1-1-12 today is only the 31st.

Me-Maam this check is dated for the 1st

    SC-yea I know

    Me-Well I cant cash it

SC-My son was here yesterday and they cashed

Me-That shouldnt have happened. We don't cash post dated checks. I am not going to do it.

SC-Than get someone here that will.

Me-noone is gonna do it. We don't except post dated checks.

SC-The banks arent open tomorrow. What am I do to

Me-You are welcome to come back after midnight. You can watch the ball drop than come in and get your checked cashed. Or if you like you can come tomorrow.

SC-this is so stupid. Its stupid i said its stupid.

Me Maam your employer dated it for the 1st thats when it can get cashed.
(as she is walking away) Happy New year Maam I hope you have a good one.

    SC-Blah Blah Blah

I had a another lady that didnt have her ID. She got mad that I would not cash her check.

Can I also say that I think its wrong when people cant wait behind the "please wait here " sign I had a man lhand me his check over my current customers head.

He handed the check over someone's head?? That's unbelievably rude.

Just a note: As part of the "Check 21" rules passed a few years ago, the dates on checks are *not* enforceable. Many banks and other companies still check the date on a check, but should you write a post-dated check you have no guarantee it won't be cashed prior to that date. I recommend no one post-date checks any more.

My seasonal job doing Children's Sports Pics, we have people who post date checks, they ask and we will do it for them, we flag the post dated checks with neon colored stickers so they can be found easy when we go through the cash boxes.. I think that when I take over the business, I will phase out checks all together, but these are personal checks and the rate of ones that bounce is increasing with every year.. And I mean ones where the people know it's bad, ones written on bank accounts that have been closed for several years...

Back when I worked for Dice, I spent many long hours dealing with bad checks. My happiness moment was when I submitted a bad check to the authorities and the woman called me right away to tell me that idiot had just gone over the felony limit and she was sending police to pick him up.

Are banks willing to enforce it if a business *explicitly* requests such a thing, in writing? Just curious (and I will simply assume that such a thing would not be done for non-biz customers)

If I were the customer at the window ahead of that guy, I would....er, *ahem* strongly consider doing something to him that should not be mentioned on these boards . What a dick.

The date on a check is essentially meaningless at this point.

While places say that they're not valid after 90 days, that's merely a courtesy banks give customers. Checks are good essentially "forever" unless you put a stop pay on one, and then you'd better keep that stop pay active or they can come back later and still cash it.

This is especially problematical for companies due to withholding laws. A company should never hand out paychecks prior to their payday because if an employee cashes the check early, then the company could be liable for some pretty ugly fines for not submitting the correct information to the government. (note; my data is US-centric, with a focus on California)

However, if you have a post-dated check and the bank chooses to not cash it, then too bad, so sad, come back when the date on the check rolls around.

I doubt it, thanks to the way checks are processed nowadays. Ask your bank about it.

All banks will explicitly say what they do with post-dated checks. Most will simply process them immediately if they are deposited. A few will return them. I don't know of any that will hold them until the date on the check.
