That's not likely the reason. I mean, I buy things from the States all the time and I often resign myself to some brutal shipping. Just pass the cost on to the consumer, if they want to pay it they will.
Why don't you ship to Canada? I'm just curious. Is it something perishable or something annoying with customs?
Customs has been a HUGE issue as far as I've seen before. Things get delayed for ages in there, and buyers almost never listen as to why stuff is still waiting there. And of course, shipping costs are extremely high, and customers complain about THAT, too. So in all honesty, its not worth me worrying about them dinging my rating, or leaving me a negative feedback over a shipping problem I can't do anything about.
I've got 100% feedback on this new account, and I'm not going to put it in jeopardy. (My old account had two dings from the abovementioned problems, would've stayed with it, but long story short, ebay told me to just start a new account.)
I can see the frustration, and would be just the same if not more frustrated. Did you happen to offer it to the second-highest bidder if there was one or did you just have to relist it?
Relisted it, the second highest buyer didn't reply within 24 hours so I just sighed and sucked it up. I've had second chance people reply days later, and honestly, not wanting to stick around and wait for ages for them.

whereas sellers need to bitch and moan about getting everything for nothing and getting away with not learning how to read the seller's rules; hence they have the option for negative feedback also. Yes, I buy 10x more than I sell.
I assume you mean "buyers" and not "sellers" here.
I haven't dealt with eBay in a couple of years, but isn't there some way you can search specifically for items that are "available in Canada"? I seem to vaguely remember doing that specifically so I didn't spot something that I absolutely had to have -- and then being heartbroken because the seller didn't ship internationally. ()
I have been willing to transship for my nonAmerican buddies before. I usually just ask for amazon goodies in exchange for whatever the shipping costs end up being. It does get tricky shipping electronics behind what used to be the Iron Curtain, I had a motherboard and a video card show up with the video card missing in Romania. We figure that the customs inspectors just couldn't resist a [used] video card. I wouldn't dare ship something like an Ipod or equivalent [that type of stuff I handcarry over on vacation and samizdat express it if we have common friends that can hand transfer instead of shipping.]

Being Canadian, it's a huge frustration when people flat out refuse to ship to Canada. However, I have seen some auctions/buy it nows where the seller had United States listed as their "ships to" option, but didn't state that they would refuse to ship anywhere else. In those cases, I've messaged the seller and asked if they would be willing to ship to me, saying I really like their item and don't mind paying the extra shipping. That usually gets a good response. However, if the seller takes the trouble to write "I won't ship outside the US at all", then I don't bother. My attitude then is "Fine, to hell with you, I'll give my money to somebody else."
And I don't blame sellers for Customs or shipping/duty fees. I know that's not their fault. Unfortunately a lot of people don't, and that just fucks it all up for the rest of us, because sellers get sick of being blamed for things outside their control.
FYI, I've only ever had one package seriously delayed by Canada Customs, and that was during the holiday shipping season. Since then I've never had a problem.
FWIW, I haven't shipping to Canada for a while. I know it takes longer to fill out the paperwork. For the items I've sold I'll check the box that I'll ship to US only, but in the description I'll say "Shipping outside of the US is extra. Once I get your address, shipping charges will be calculated and then you can pay for the item." This way I'm not blatantly excluding those outside of the US, and for those that do ask I'll do what I can to accommodate them. If they pay too early you can refuse the original payment and request a larger payment (padded with the charges for shipping outside of the US), or take the original and demand a second as the remaining shipping payment cost.
^Stuff like that I'm cool with. I don't mind waiting while the seller gets the accurate shipping cost, or sends a request for a second payment to make up the shipping difference. I've sent things to a couple of friends in the US, I know shipping can be expensive.
I'm sorry you had to deal with a jerk - but I will say that on no less than 10 occasions I've come across an auction that has said "no international buyers" but when I've asked if they would be willing to ship to Canada (I have been on Ebay for over 10 years, over 90% of the stuff I purchase has been from the USA, and I have a 100% feedback) and only once has a seller told me no! They just don't want to ship to China or Austraila etc, but most of them don't mind when asked - so I've never seen any harm in asking unless it specifically states "I don't ship to Canada."
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away.
Oh well, I have money here and I figured if I just said I had that money, you'd mail my order out before I paid.
What a dumbass...if someone doesn't ship somewhere, you don't post some random address to get around the restrictions and then think it's all good and dandy when your address in Bumfuck, USA is actually in Bumfuck-Eh, Canada. I also refuse to ship internationally because I don't feel like having someone's order get stuck in customs for months because it's too heavy or smells funny. I wish I didn't have to do that, but like you, I don't feel like getting dinged because of shipping issues I can't control. I'll get a tracking number, but once it's in the mail, it's no longer my problem.
Given how entitled Seraph's jerk sounded, he'd have probably thrown a fit if he was charged the extra to ship to Canada. "You listed it at this price and that's the price I want!"
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.
^And entitled people like that, who bitch about shipping or bitch about Customs just cock it all up for the rest of us who live outside the US. Actually, I can think of two times something sent to me had problems. One was a customs backlog- something being held up during the holiday rush (only time I have ever had that problem), and the second time was a seller's mistake- he sent me a prosthetic cast latex headdress, and decided to throw in an extra- some pros-aide adhesive. Unfortunately he didn't label the bottle, and customs sent it back to him. So he corrected that error and sent it back to me, this time there were no problems.
This is why I am pissed eBay no longer allows sellers to give negative feedback. I recently had someone win a WWE belt buckle from me and never pay. No communication, no pay. I filed the dispute, they never responded, I waited the week and relisted it. I left feedback anyway, it records as positive but I wrote that they never paid or communicated, hopefully someone will see it. It really sucks that every buyer now has 100% feedback, and without the ability to give them negative they can hold a sellers feedback hostage.
A few years back, I once bought a 19th century map from someone on e-bay. I say 'bought,' when what actually happened was that I 'won' it, started the process to pay... And it didn't go through. Tried again in two days, to find out that promptly after my 'win,' the guy almost immediately relisted it for a day, and someone else won it. When I bid for it, I was the only bidder; thought I'd gotten it extraordinarily cheap. In the re-sell, with multiple bidders, it sold for just over 4 times 'my' price. When I left feedback saying he scammed me, he turned around and left feedback saying I refused to pay. I complained to e-bay, and he won.
Who hears all your prayers? Why, the NSA, of course!
Yeah I've had people ask me nicely beforehand if I'd ship to Canada, and they'd be willing to pay extra for it, and I've done that for them.
But this guy? Just assumed I'd ship something to Canada for $1.75. -.- I can barely ship stuff around the US for that, let alone get it across a border, LOL.
