    My store is in an upper middle class neighbourhood. We have more than one customer who between $300-$900 on a daily basis. Most of our sales are between $80-$200 and once or twice a week we will have a BIG sale of over 2 grand.

    It's always super funny to me when a customer asks for a discount on a $300 sale "because I am buying so much"

    I always nod, smile and call over a manager and ask on their behalf and the managers usually get a look when they see their total, today one slipped and said "it's only 300 though?" and the woman got super mad about it.

    I know $300 is a big amount for me and as she said, it was a big amount for her but her self important attitude didn't help when the manager had just okayed a discount for a $4000 order of curtains a hotel was buying from us. That's a "buying so much" discount. Not your new shower decorations lady!

    She was super indignant when the manager wouldn't give her anything and threatened to leave it then when the manager said "Im sorry to hear that" and started to void her transaction she suddenly wanted to buy from us again. Bluff called.

        It doesn't take much to rack up $300 in household items at a place like say Bed, Bath and Beyond. Hate to say it, but I don't see that as discount worthy, either. A grand, maybe.
        They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.

          Buying much?

          Really, with today's pricing where is $300 a large sale outside a 'dollar store'?

          Last week I had three coupons, two for $10 off any $50 in groceries and one for $20 off any $100 in groceries. I almost panicked when I found they expired in three days. Did I have any problem filling shopping carts to use up the coupons? No way, in-fact it was almost depressing to see how little $240+ in groceries amounted to, except I save $40 and only paid $201.96.

          $300 is less than any computer I have purchased in the last ten years ( and I have bought a lot of them)
          $300 is less than the cheap camera I own.
          $300 will barely buy you a good suit with extra pants, and once you add in a good pair of shoes it will be hard to be below $300.

          $300 is personally a lot of money, but in no way is it a big sale for any store that I can think of aside from a said 'dollar store'.

              Outside commercial/government sales we have seen families buy up to five complete systems so all the family members their own personal machines. And two and three complete systems are very common, especially if someone is going off to college/university and needs the latest. The parents usually want something just as good when they see what is available and a sibling get the old home computer. If there is still another sibling you see the three system sales.

                If you're buying something that costs only pennies or nickels, like Bazooka Joe gum, and buying enough of it to total $300, yes. If you're buying something that costs $50, and only getting maybe 6 of them, then no, I don't see getting any kind of discount for that.

                  I hated that with a fiery passion when I worked at the hardware store. Even sales of a few hundred dollars were not big sales when we regularly had customers who paid in the tens of thousands.

                  So, NO! you can't have a discount on your $500 purchase and NO you are not spending enough to be discount worthy.

                    We get that all the time from customers.

                    "I spent $2000 last year on a bathroom renovation so I deserve...(a discount, free delivery, special consideration on a return that shouldn't be, exemptions, exceptions and bending of rules, etc.)"

                    "Oh? $2,000? Is that all?"
                    If we look back, we see that they bought the lowest end, lowest priced fixtures available and went for the sale prices whenever possible.

                    Oh, and that stuff for the renovation was probably all they bought in our store because they sure as heck don't look familiar.
                    Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.

                      We just gave a slightly-deeper-than-normal discount to a customer today. She bought over $600 of product - but she's a *very* good customer who regularly drops a few hundred on a case, and will buy a lot of wine at our tastings.

                      Normal: 10%
                      Hers: 12%

                      Not much, really, but it made her happy, and we know she'll talk us up to everyone at the party she's throwing. Could mean more customers.

                        I get that a lot with people who buy, at most, $15-$20 at Random Craft Store but not with the people who buy hundreds of dollars worth of stuff. Then again, those that DO spend that kind of money have their discounts already in-hand [coupons] and know better then to come to the store without.
                        Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

                          No, you don't. You spend approx. $35 per ad once every few months when your apt. goes vacant again. Wonder why your tenants want out so often?

                          We once had a customer call up and complain that he had been advertising for 15 years "And I've never gotten anything free from you!"

                          A bunch of us wanted to send him some of the cheap pens with the company name on them, but we were outvoted.

                              Too bad I can't share much about the client I take calls for, though as many of you know it's a very high end home department store. People regularly spend tens of thousands of dollars on a single order, though of course most are smaller - even then, it tends to be in the thousands. So when we get a customer who starts talking about how much they spent with us and we see that in their entire order history it's been about $1000...it's just SO hard not to laugh at them. And I'm not even being snobby...even with my discount I can't really justify buying much from this place myself. Seriously, we rarely even bend over backwards for the really high rollers...and to their credit, they rarely ask. (in my experience)
