  • How am I supposed to be more discreet?!?

Got a complaint on a survey today from a guest that said I should have been "more discreet" in calling her a cab.

This is how it happened last week with this guest.

Guest *calling from room*: "Can you call me a cab to go downtown?"
    Me: "Sure!"
Me: *hangs up and calls cab company*
Me: "Hi, this is bhskittykatt at [Motel], and I have a guest who needs a lift downtown. She is in [room]."
Cab company: "We'll be there in a few."
    Me: "Thanks!" *click*

A few minutes later, she called to tell me she found a ride, and needed to cancel the cab, so I called the cab company back and cancelled (that's how I remember it was her). No problem.

Tell me, did I do something wrong there?

I was ranting to Other MOD about it.
Me: "What did she want me to do? Use the back office phone and whisper into the receiver?"
Other MOD: "No, you're supposed to do this." *picks up phone* "Hello?" Closes eyes, nods a few times. "...Did you get that?"
    Me:

Ugh. That made me feel a little better. But still, what the hell? (I especially don't get it, since she wasn't even in the office when I called the cab! No one was!)

Besides which, is there something shameful or risky about calling a cab?

It's not like you were standing in the lobby screaming that she was carrying a bag of loose diamonds, or had peed her pants.

      1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
      2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
      3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
      4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Next time just call her a bitch instead of a cab. :-)

What's most confusing to me is she called you from HER ROOM to ask for the cab. How the hell does she know how discreet or indiscreet you were???
Fiancee: We're going to need to do laundry. I'm out of clean pants.
Me: Sounds like a job for Gravekeeper!
          Fiancee: What?!
          Me: Nevermind.

Maybe it was because you gave out her room number. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, unless you're her. I'm willing to bet she's mentally unstable, probably has an illness that engenders paranoia. I'm glad your supervisor sees that, to the point of being funny about it. My bosses would tell me to tailor my behavior to the guest's delusions.

Isn't it obvious? She expected you to use telepathy to communicate with the taxi driver so no one would know that she was committing the horrendous sin of *gasp!* riding in a TAXI!

Aren't all employees of any kind supposed to be outfitted with microchips in our brains that allows us to communicate with every other worker-type person without words, and that allows us to know exactly what the customer wants even if they don't tell us or say something completely different than what they actually want us to do?

Hmm. Perhaps the word "discrete' does not mean what she thinks it means.

That's what I was thinking, maybe she think discreet means something to do with time, and is complaining about the fact that you had already called them by the time she found a ride (complaining about your promptness makes her just as much an SC, of course).

The only thing I can see is that you announced her room number. Everyone in earshot of you now knows that the guest in room XXX is heading downtown, and by extension, leaving her room.

I have always been told the the desk should never speak a guest's room number. That way someone won't mug you on the way to your room or something like that. How that stops someone from following you? I don't know. If I really want to find out what room you are in, you are going to have a hard time keeping me from doing so.

Who does she think she is? Lady gaga or something. I mean is people waiting for autographs or pictures in the lobby.
