Hell sometimes they don't even care if you are wearing the uniform. If you happen to look like you may work there, they bug you....

Even when you're in the mall and nowhere near your job, on your day off, nearly late for a "Magic" tournament.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

I don't mind pointing out items to people. But nowadays I have my earbuds in going from clock to breakroom (I have to run fast lol). I come in every once in a while and sometimes bring my dog (I don't work at a pet store, we just allow small dogs in) and people recognize me but don't bother me thankfully. And if my managers want to tell me something they wait till I'm clocked in. And I get paid for the meetings we have. I have 2 extra hrs on my check next week
Doggy! I'd be tempted to come up to you personally - to tell you how cute the doggy is. my store also has no rules for pets either cos we don't sell food except for bottled sodas & bagged chips etc.

If I'm off, I will usually try to find someone on the clock for the customer, and if a customer I worked with earlier has a question I'll probably answer it. But not more than that. Or telling someone where the toilets are. Hell that one I'll do for free any day.

although if I really want to be incognito I'll toss my coat on cos it completely covers my uniform shirt.

Oh god yes. I once had a woman bark a question at me while I was shopping in my local Co-op. I was wearing a very scruffy pair of black jeans and an even scruffier Slipknot hoodie. I told her "Don't know, don't care" and she went off and got the manager... who then, trying not to laugh, informed the woman that since I didn't work there, he couldn't tell me off for being rude.

If I get stopped on my way to a paid break, I will help them and add that time to my break. Say you go on break at 1, customer stop you and it takes to 1:05 until you are done, then I count my break starting at 1:05.

However if I am not on the clock, they will get told so. If I am coming it I will tell them I will punch in and than help them, if I have punched out and get stopped, I will kindly direct them to customer service, unless I see the needed employee in my immediate area to send them to.

I can guarantee the SC's wouldn't work off the clock at their job.

Can't do that where I work; you get five minutes grace to walk to the break room, but apart from that, you're timed regardless of whether it's a paid break or an unpaid one. So if I spent ten minutes helping a customer on my break, I'd lose ten minutes. I'm not prepared to do that, sorry.

I've always had the same unfortunate experience with this that LNS had -- If I get off for a 15 minute break at 1, and help a customer for 5 minutes, my break now has ten minutes left in it. Fair? Hell no. Commonly done? Everywhere, all the time, even when managers REQUIRE you to do this.
