Real grits, made the old fashioned way, are awesome!
This ^_^
I looove me some cheese grits. And I agree with ...well, pretty much all of the above. Grits are awesome with butter/salt/meats, not so much with sugar/cinnamon/etc. I cannot STAND oatmeal or cream of wheat, tho...I will accept the former if it's been raised to its ultimate purpose, however. Namely, oatmeal cookies.
And yeh, grits are basically just corn pone. And yes, properly-done shrimp & grits is MUCH better than they sound. The size of the shrimps alluded to earlier is probably why I grew up NOT associating the word "shrimp" with "tiny" up to a certain point. Jumbo shrimp come about six or so to a pound at times ^_^

This morning a lady went out to smoke and when she came back in she came over and ask me "what are grits?"
In Canada, "Grits" is a nickname for the Liberal party. As for the origin of that nickname, or any discussion of the relative merits of the Liberals and the other parties, that would be Fratching material.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

Oh thanks very much. Now I'm never going to be able to think about the Liberals without also thinking about a plate of bland cornmeal mush.

For some odd reason I just do not like grits. I love cream of wheat and oatmeal, and polenta which is corn ground up and cooked in a similar manner but no dice. Every few years I give them another try.
I've never tried them. They're not exactly a big food item here. Maybe I'll have to see if I can find some at the store and try making them myself.
I can't stand Cream of Wheat. I only keep a box around because my recipe for shortbread needs it.
Polenta, I like. Giada De Laurentiis has a recipe that has polenta croutons in it. Those are really good!

I absolutely love oatmeal. Bowl of old-fashioned with lots of butter, sugar, and heavy cream on top. But that might just be the Scottish genes....

We use Cream of Wheat to pack in on top of the black powder in the cylinders of our pistols (for shooting blanks). It keeps them from chain firing--when the detonation of one cylinder sets off the gun powder in adjacent cylinders in a chain reaction.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

Just proves, yet again, that the the English ain't got no damn sense!
(No offense. I hate the English, with exceptions for the rare wonderful ones on here! Just like I hate Texans, except for the rare lovely ones on here!)

Do you know what my mother tried to kill me with?
I can eat anything in the world. I can. Raw fish, I don't care, I can eat it. I've eaten in Japan, all over, love the food, not a thing wrong with it. Uh, raw snake, anything. Been to Mexico, I eat anything. Any food, I eat it.
But I can not get down a lump of Cream of Wheat.
Something happens to me, and every time I swallow it, it gets right *there* and it - urk. I can not get down a lump of -- You can hold a $5,000 bill right in front of my face. Put it in my hand. "Swallow the lump, you can have it--" Can't get it down!
I can not get it down. And my mother tried to kill me off with that Cream of Wheat. She'd bring that bowl down and I'd just look at it. Take that spoon and stir it up. I knew that lump was in there somewhere. And I'll find it if I have to look five hours! I know that there's a lump in there.
And I'd find it. "Here it is! Tried to kill me off!"
And as soon as I'd put the cream in it, five more'd show up. "They're all in here! They're all in the Cream of Wheat, all these lumps to make you gag."
And then she'd try to cover up the lumps by putting raisins in the cream of wheat. No chance. My throat knows a raisin from a lump of Cream of Wheat, I'm telling you that.
She tried to do the same thing to my mashed potatoes! Puttin' raisins in my mashed potatoes. I'll find it.

Recipe? That sounds interesting.
I would say that 95% of my breakfasts are oatmeal with a dash of cinnamon and raisins. Helps keep my cholesterol under control.

I wouldn't call it food, so much as stuff we've found you can ingest with no long-term consequence.
My Dad is into that, having the "Dad Cuisine Gene" that all Father's have that kicks on when they turn 40 causes them to suddenly crave really disgusting stuff and try and force it on their offspring with false promises of "It tastes really good!" and "you don't know what you're missing!' while slurping it down joyfully in abject horror to everyone else under 18 at the table... like sardines, or lima beans, or, *shudder* SCRAPPLE!
